The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio shows a robust fruit profile and powerful 15% alcohol. The wine reflects the warmth and heat of the vintage, but a deft hand in the cellar assures balance and elegance in winemaking. The bouquet reveals dark cherry, rum cake, balsam herb and tarry smoke. There's no mistaking that hot-vintage signature and the more exuberant and boisterous personality displayed here. The cellar folks should be proud of their efforts in this 5,000-bottle release. ... This red cuts a broad swath with cherry, strawberry, iron and savory herb flavors. Dense yet lively and harmonious, with a long, mineral- and spice-infused aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2042. 850 cases made, 100 cases imported.

This shows relatively fine-textured tannins that are plush at the same time, together with berry, cherry and light hazelnut character that touches both the nose and palate nicely. It’s creamy and polished with a caressing finish. A couple years will bring it together. Excellent balance and freshness for the vintage. Drink after 2023.

A darkly alluring display of fresh tobacco, lavender, balsam herbs, mint and crushed cherries wafts up from the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio. This is elegant and pliant, with velvety textures ushering in a mix of strawberry and plum, complemented by exotic spices, yet also contrasted by a salty mineral core. Sweet tannins frame the expression well, leaving hints of black tea, sour citrus and currants to linger long. This is very nicely done and wonderfully balanced for the vintage.

Vallocchio is selected from a 7ha expanse where Fanti’s oldest vines – now 35 to 41 years old – are located. In 2017, only 5,000 bottles were produced and grapes from the Macchiarelle vineyard, which are typically destined for the Riserva, were used for this instead. Sweet/savoury spices permeate the nose, eventually making way for grilled oily herbs. Super-concentrated blackberry fruit and dry, extracted tannins need time to settle, though this will continue to strut in a brawny, muscular fashion.
Winery
The aroma is mature with notes of ripe cherries, savory chocolate, vanilla and white pepper.

Varietal: Sangiovese

Wines made with the round, darkly colored Sangiovese grape varietal tend to demonstrate the grape's key attributes: high acidity, moderate tannins and pale red color These grapes have been grown in their native Italy for thousands of years, and are said to be one of the key varietals which were so loved by the ancient Etruscan and Roman civilization Fast forward a few millennia, and all over the world, wineries are still growing these grapes in order to capture that renowned and flavorful essence. What makes Sangiovese so loved by drinkers and vintners alike is its wonderful ability to soak up the earthy, woody flavors of the oak barrels they are aged in, and present these in the glass alongside fresh, bright summer fruit notes. Whilst Sangiovese grapes are often blended during the fermentation process, they are also drank as single variety wines, both young and fresh, and aged and complex.

Region: Tuscany

The central Italian region of Tuscany is widely understood to be one of the world's most famous and highly regarded wine regions. The beautiful rolling hillsides and medieval towns and castles which are a key feature of the area are also home to many of Europe's finest wineries, and extremely high quality vineyards growing the distinctive Sangiovese and Vernaccia grape varietals which are the flavorful backbone of Tuscany's wonderful red and white wines. For almost three thousand years, this region has been recognized as an ideal home for wine production on a large scale, and the ancient Etruscans, Greeks and Romans all noticed that fine grape varietals flourished on the unique soils and under the hot sunshine which typifies the area. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

Country: Italy

It isn't difficult to understand why Italy is famed not just for the quality of its wines, but also for the vast variety and range of characteristics found in the wines there. The terrain of the country varies wildly, from the lush rolling green hills and valley of Tuscany, to the sun drenched rocky coasts of Sicily, the mountainous and alpine regions of the north, and the marshy lowlands of the east. Italy really does have a little bit of everything. Combine this huge range of landscapes with an almost perfect climate for grape cultivation, and you have a country seemingly designed for viticultural excellence. The results speak for themselves, and it is clear to see that wine has become an inseparable part of Italian culture as a result of its abundance and brilliance. Each village, city and region has a local wine perfectly matched with the cuisine of the area, and not an evening passes without the vast majority of Italian families raising a glass of locally sourced wine with pride and pleasure.
