The Fattoria dei Barbi 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Fiore is always distinguished by that extra level of dark intensity and concentration that comes from this special site selection of fruit. This is always one of my favorite wines from this estate, and some of that magic is played forward in this hot-vintage expression. I also think Vigna del Fiore, thanks to its structure and the purity of its aromas, is better suited to a longer aging window. The bouquet offers lots of dark fruit, plum, earth and wild rose. This 4,000-bottle release was born in a site characterized by a mix of limestone alberese and schistous galestro soils that are typical of this part of Tuscany. ... More details

Opulent, boasting loamy clay, plum, cherry, tobacco and mineral flavors, this red is backed by a matrix of beefy tannins. Resonates on the finish, finding equilibrium in the end. Best from 2025 through 2042. 300 cases made, 50 cases imported.

Bigger style for Barbi, but it still remains fresh and flavorful with dark-berry, walnut and dried-flower character. It’s medium-bodied with lightly chewy tannins and fresh fruit at the end. Rather complex. Drink or hold.

Vigna del Fiore is a stony vineyard in the southern reaches of Montalcino. Located in a tight valley surrounded by forest, it reaches almost 300 metres above sea level. Owner Stefano Cinelli Colombini only produced 4,000 bottles in 2017 so as not to compromise the quality of the estate’s ‘Blu’ label Brunello. It exhibits greater fruit depth than the latter as well as darker tones of black cherry and black currant. It's a bit dusty on the entry but ultimately polished, and the tannins remain supple and well-behaved. Well-proportioned in its full figure with enough grip for the next five years.

The single-vineyard 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Fiore is delicate and floral in nature, scents of rose and violet giving way to dried strawberries and hints of cedary spice. It washes across the palate with elegance, as silken textures carry red and hints of blue fruit across a core of saline-infused acidity. This tapers off structured and dry, yet still quite lifted, leaving hints of licorice to linger on. I worry about the longevity of the 2017 Vigna del Fiore; it will need a few years to soften but doesn't come across as having the persistence of fruit to reward extended cellaring. That said, it's a very pretty wine.

Colour: Brilliant and intense ruby red. Bouquet: Cherry, plum and blackberry. Hints of cinnamon, white pepper and nutmeg. Taste: Round, smooth and balanced. Fleshy structure well supported by silky tannins. Long lasting finish.

Varietal: Sangiovese

Sangiovese grapes have been grown in their native Italy and several other countries for a very long time now, with many experts claiming that they were even enjoyed by the ancient Etruscan civilization, long before the spread of the Roman Empire which helped raise the profile of this dark colored and flavorful varietal. It isn't difficult to understand their enduring appeal – the Sangiovese grape varietal delivers wines which are the epitome of finery, soaking up delicate and complex oak and vanilla flavors from the barrels they are aged in, or leaving light, refreshing strawberry notes on the tongue when drank young. Whilst many traditional wineries prefer to use these acidic grapes for single variety wines, many have experimented with blending them with other fine varietals in order to balance out their combination of high acidity and light body. The results have often been truly special, and Sangiovese continues to impress today as much as it did centuries ago.

Region: Tuscany

The central Italian region of Tuscany is widely understood to be one of the world's most famous and highly regarded wine regions. The beautiful rolling hillsides and medieval towns and castles which are a key feature of the area are also home to many of Europe's finest wineries, and extremely high quality vineyards growing the distinctive Sangiovese and Vernaccia grape varietals which are the flavorful backbone of Tuscany's wonderful red and white wines. For almost three thousand years, this region has been recognized as an ideal home for wine production on a large scale, and the ancient Etruscans, Greeks and Romans all noticed that fine grape varietals flourished on the unique soils and under the hot sunshine which typifies the area. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
