Bright red-ruby. Slightly porty aromas of blackberry, cassis, menthol licorice and pungent peppery herbs. Intensely flavored but distinctly herbal and a bit medicinal in the style of the year. I find this a bit pungently green and lacking in sweetness, but the mid-palate grain and harmonious tannins are very 2016. Still quite tight and savory, and a bit dry on the finish. This firmly structured wine may yet gain in sweetness and pliancy with time in bottle but it's a bit medicinal today. (These wines are made by Julia Halupczok and enologist Matias Michelini.) Winery
Deep red color with black notes and violet dyes. Complex and intense aromas of red and black fruits, spicy and mineral notes., combined with aromas of vanilla, tobacco and chocolate. On the palate it shows a full and concentrated body, ripe tannins, complex and velvety with a persistent finish and great elegance. Its fruity and mineral sensations express an elegant long-lasting wine.

Varietal: Malbec

The heavy purple bunches of Malbec grapes found growing in many New and Old World countries produce some extremely varied and distinctive wines. Their thick skins have a high tannin content, which means the wines produced from them are generally full-bodied and deep red in color. Single variety Malbec wines tend to be extremely plummy in their flavor, packing a strong punch and making them ideal for matching with spicy foods. However, because of their high malic acid content and their powerful tannins, many wineries use these grapes for blending with more mellow varietals, producing wonderfully complex wines which age beautifully and produce remarkable flavors and aromas. Because of this, Malbec holds the high position of being one of the few grape varietals used in the production of Bordeaux wines, widely recognized as being the finest wines on earth.

Region: Cuyo

The region of Cuyo has been internationally associated with fine Argentinian wine for several decades, and has a wine history which stretches back centuries to the time of the original Spanish settlers, who sought areas in which to plant imported grape vines for sacramental wine production. The region contains several of Argentina's most renowned and widely appreciated provinces, including the Mendoza, La Rioja, San Juan and San Luis, and the mountainous nature of this arid region provides an ideal environment for vineyard cultivation. As the mighty Desaguadero River snakes its way between the Andes, it deposits plenty of important minerals in the soil, which allow grape varietals closely associated with the Argentinian wine industry – such as Malbec – to grow to a perfect level of ripeness. As such, even in the driest areas of the Cuyo region, flavorful and fruit-forward wines are produced in impressive amounts.
