Today it is part of the Fladgate Partnership - alongside Taylor’s, Croft and Wiese & Krohn - but like many of the Port houses Fonseca has a rich history, founded in 1815 by Joao dos Santos Fonseca. The house declared its first vintage back in 1840, but the wine itself only became popular 20 years later. Fonseca has built its reputation on consistently high-quality wines. The company attributes this to the continuity of family involvement, the long history of working in the vineyards, and the knowledge and skill passed down from one generation to the next. RM Soft and savoury, with engaging creamy fruit flavours ferrying onto a long, suave and seductive finish. RS Beautifully integrated nose of cocoa and orange peel unveils a syrupy palate brimming with nutty, toffee and red fruit characters. The finish is warm but very complex, long and structured. A very good example of its kind. DW Relatively muted on the nose, with candied orange and a little almond on the palate. Perhaps a little too sweet for some. ... More details

A gorgeous Port at that right stage where there is still freshness and hints of orange and dried fruits, while the wood aging is concentrating the wine into its essence. It is rich, full, yet at the same time has a great tang of spirit and acidity.

A touch darker in profile than its peers, with toasted black sesame, caramel, walnut and hazelnut cream notes backed by singed orange peel and ginseng accents. Stays focused thanks to a light bitter almond thread on the finish, giving this a slightly drier feel. Drink now. 2,050 cases made, 1,600 cases imported.

The NV 20 Year Old Tawny was bottled with a bar top cork in 2013. It comes in at 111.6 grams per liter of residual sugar. A big mouthful, this is a 20 that first coats the palate and then ends with silky texture and concentrated flavor. Very graceful, it is not as impressive in terms of mid-palate density, but it is more than respectable. It shows fine complexity, appropriate to its age category. The finish seals the deal, more lingering and gripping than I expected from the first taste. It is another delicious Tawny from the Taylor Fladgate group this issue, so dig in.

Dried fruits and nuts on the nose. Fuller and more saline than the 10-year-old; gives an impression of stronger extract. Both fruitier and lighter on its feet than the 10-year-old. Nutty, mellow and elegant.

Region: Porto

Porto has a history which stretches back centuries, and involves empires, riches, and the discovery of new countries and civilisations. Today, the city and the region which surrounds it is perhaps best known for wine, and in particular, the tawny colored, aromatic and delicious Port wines which have been wildly popular since the 18th century. The region Porto is situated in, the Douro wine region of Portugal, is one of the oldest protected wine regions in the world, and is widely considered to be one of the finest places in Europe for viticulture. Indeed, the area around Porto supports an astonishing number of native and imported grape varietals, although by far the most common grapes found flourishing on the valley sides are Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tempranillo, Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional – all grapes most commonly used for Port wine production.

Country: Portugal

Most of us are quick to associate Portugal primarily with the excellent fortified wines which come out of the Porto area, but there is much more to Portuguese viticulture than just this. Perhaps the most popular still wines the country produces are the varieties from the Vinho Verde region, which uses grapes that do not achieve high doses of sugar, meaning the wines are at their best when young and full of natural, springy fruit flavors The wines of the Douro region have undergone many transformations in their flavor and character over the centuries; once regarded as a bitter wine, the exporters experimented with fortifying the wine with brandy. After several centuries, vintners found a balance in the modern age which is at once reminiscent of Port wine, yet with the structure and character closer to other fine Portuguese wines. Thanks to the appellation system of Portugal and the strict laws governing wine production, Portuguese wines continue to maintain their reputation for quality and the distinctive characteristics they carry.
