On the savory side, this red opens with freshly mowed grass, hay and eucalyptus aromas before revealing cherry, strawberry, rose and mineral flavors. Fleshy, with a matrix of dense tannins flexing their muscles on the finish. Shows excellent potential. Best from 2023 through 2042. 1,000 cases made, 250 cases imported.

Rose, red-berry, wild herb and baking-spice aromas take center stage on this fragrant, elegant red. Loaded with finesse, the full-bodied palate delivers strawberry compote, star anise and cinnamon alongside a mineral note evoking rusty nail. Taut polished tannins and bright acidity provide the age-worthy framework. Drink 2024–2046.

A creamy and juicy red with cedar and meat to the plum and berry undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied, fruity and flavorful. Hints of fudge and hazelnuts. Very drinkable now, but better after 2022.

The 2016 Barolo La Rosa is another attractive wine from Fontanafredda. Sweet, perfumed aromatics and mid-weight structure convey grace. But there is good depth and fine balance, too. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, spice and subtle earthy notes linger. La Rosa is pretty delicate, but I would still cellar it for a few years, as the tannins need to soften.
Winery
On the nose, clear-cut overtones of withered roses, violets, tobacco, underbrush, spices, and a slight touch of vanilla. Dense, closely-woven tannins start out smooth, almost velvety, and then explode in the palate with fruit. It is excellent served with flavorful meat dishes and mature cheeses.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The dusty purple grapes of the Nebbiolo variety are widely considered to be amongst the finest in the world, and hold many unique characteristics which have secured their place in wine making history. Indeed, almost all of the most respected and sought after red wines of Italy are made using this grape varietal, and it wasn't long before several New World wineries started experimenting with the fruit of this special vine, too. Nebbiolo grapes are renowned for their ability to age beautifully, with their strong and dense tannins mellowing out and becoming more balanced inside the oak. Alongside this, they hold some of the most complex and exciting flavors to be found in any grape, which range from gorgeous notes of black truffle, to aromatic violets and tobacco tones.

The region has a similar summer climate to nearby French regions such as Bordeaux, but the rest of their year is considerably colder, and far drier as a result of the rain shadow cast by the Alps. The wineries which cover much of Piedmont have, over many generations, mastered how to make the most of the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which thrive here, and nowadays are beginning to experimenting with many imported varietals to increase the region's range and meet international demand.
