Officially non-vintaged, the recent issue of the NV Extra Brut Entre Ciel et Terre blends 60% Pinot Noir with 40% Pinot Meunier, predominantly from the 2010 harvest. The wine spent five years on the second lees and was disgorged in March 2017 (Lot EX100317). The bouquet is clear, fine and fresh in its stunningly fruity aromas of mirabelles. Filigreed, finessed and elegant on the palate, this is a lean, pure and stimulatingly dry yet mouth-filling cuvée with a more airy rather than earthy character. The finish is dry, firm, yeasty and full of character, but it is perhaps a bit too austere for some of our readers at the moment. In any case, it's a lovely gastronomic Champagne with a distinctive character. ... More details

Menthol, spices, orchard fruit and spring flowers add up to a lively, energetic and delicate bouquet. Very singular spice aromas appear with aeration. Tense and taut, the perfectly balanced palate displays a laser-like texture. This is all complexity and finesse - a very interesting Champagne. 90% Pinot Meunier and 10% Pinot Noir, with a dosage of 4.83g/l.

Expressive and creamy, this offers flavors of whole-grain toast, baked currant, honey and lemon preserves, with a spicy, mineral-tinged underpinning

Her NV Brut Entre Ciel Et Terre is a refined wine laced with perfumed peaches, apricots, smoke, flowers and mint. This mid-weight yet generous Champagne offers gorgeous depth and richness, with a long, refined finish. The Ciel et Terre shows more than enough complexity and nuance to offer fine drinking now and over the next few years. Though labeled a NV wine, Entre Ciel Et Terre is a single-vintage wine (in this case 2003), 41% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 24% Meunier that spent 12 months in oak and was bottled with 4 grams of dosage.

This blend of chardonnay (50 percent), pinot noir and meunier spends eight years on the lees. That extended aging has brought the wine’s fruit and minerality into a sweet-savory harmony. It’s clean, round and saturated with flavor, the sweetness cut by a clean sweep of bubbles.

Varietal: Champagne Blend

There are few wine regions of the world with as much influence or fame as that of Champagne in France. The sparkling wines from this special area have long been associated with excellence and magnificent flavors, and much of their success has been down to the careful blending of fine grape varietals in order to achieve spectacular results. Most commonly, Champagne wines use both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietal grapes in more or less equal measures, often boosted by a small quantity of Pinot Meunier for extra bite. The Chardonnay varietal grapes offer their acidity and flavor to the bottle, and help with the dryness associated with quality in this type of wine. The Pinot Noir, on the other hand, gives strength to the wine, and gives Champagne its distinctive 'length' of character.

Region: Champagne

The region of Champagne in the north-easterly part of France has, for hundreds of years, been known for the production of high quality, elegant and characterful sparkling white wines. Champagne wines continue to dominate the market for sparkling wines, and are the envy of many countries, with plenty of producers attempting to emulate their unique practices. The chalky, mineral-rich soils of this high altitude region are ideal for growing the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Petit Meunier varietal grapevines which cover the region and are usually blended together in the production of Champagne wine. The climate of Champagne is far cooler than other famous wine regions in France, but the wineries which are found all over the area have generations of expertise, and have no problems in producing vast quantities of their famous produce for the world market.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
