The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero shows a beautiful signature of pressed violets, rose garden, white stone, crushed peppercorn and grilled rosemary. The wine is smooth and soft in texture, yet it feels stitched up and firm at the back thanks to the support it gets from those balanced tannins. This wine should hold 20 years or more. ... Heady aromas of camphor, rose petal and red forest berry come to the forefront along with whiffs of pipe tobacco and new leather. Full-bodied but refined and well-balanced, the savory palate features ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and mint alongside velvety tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2026–2033.

Rated 93 by Vinous Media
The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero has good depth, but is otherwise pretty unexpressive. Sweet floral and spice notes emerge, but only with great reluctance. Readers will have to be patient. It will be interesting to see how this shows post-bottling. The Monvigliero is, uncharacteristically, the most reticent of these wines today.

This Monvigliero doesn't lack personality or complexity. Here in the northern side of the appellation, Fratelli Alessandria was able to bring the tannins to the full ripeness in 2018. A dense palate features violet flavour and zesty acidity. There's a depth of liquorice, smoky woodland notes, fresh cherry fruit and peony. It's a crunchy, elegant wine which becomes leaner on the finish - a very good style for 2018.

A tight core of raspberries, minerals and oaky notes. Medium-bodied with fine, lightly abrasive tannins and a focused finish. Compact at the moment with a light feel to it. But it should expand with a little bottle age. Try from 2023.
Winery
The Monvigliero hill is historically recognized as the "grand cru" of Verduno and one of the most representative of the entire Barolo area. Our vineyard is over 35 years old, at an altitude of about 320 meters and faces south. The result is an austere but elegant wine, which has its distinctive characteristics in the aromatic complexity and gustatory depth.

green grapes

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The dusty purple grapes of the Nebbiolo variety are widely considered to be amongst the finest in the world, and hold many unique characteristics which have secured their place in wine making history. Indeed, almost all of the most respected and sought after red wines of Italy are made using this grape varietal, and it wasn't long before several New World wineries started experimenting with the fruit of this special vine, too. Nebbiolo grapes are renowned for their ability to age beautifully, with their strong and dense tannins mellowing out and becoming more balanced inside the oak. Alongside this, they hold some of the most complex and exciting flavors to be found in any grape, which range from gorgeous notes of black truffle, to aromatic violets and tobacco tones.

Region: Piedmont

The beautiful region of Piedmont in the north west of Italy is responsible for producing many of Europe's finest red wines. Famous appellations such as Barolo and Barbaresco are the envy of wine-makers all over the world, and attract plenty of tourism as a result of their traditional techniques and the stunning setting they lie in. The region has a similar summer climate to nearby French regions such as Bordeaux, but the rest of their year is considerably colder, and far drier as a result of the rain shadow cast by the Alps. The wineries which cover much of Piedmont have, over many generations, mastered how to make the most of the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which thrive here, and nowadays are beginning to experimenting with many imported varietals to increase the region's range and meet international demand.

Country: Italy

It isn't difficult to understand why Italy is famed not just for the quality of its wines, but also for the vast variety and range of characteristics found in the wines there. The terrain of the country varies wildly, from the lush rolling green hills and valley of Tuscany, to the sun drenched rocky coasts of Sicily, the mountainous and alpine regions of the north, and the marshy lowlands of the east. Italy really does have a little bit of everything. Combine this huge range of landscapes with an almost perfect climate for grape cultivation, and you have a country seemingly designed for viticultural excellence. The results speak for themselves, and it is clear to see that wine has become an inseparable part of Italian culture as a result of its abundance and brilliance. Each village, city and region has a local wine perfectly matched with the cuisine of the area, and not an evening passes without the vast majority of Italian families raising a glass of locally sourced wine with pride and pleasure.
