Rose, violet, camphor, wild berry and aromatic herb aromas are front and center in this gorgeous red. It's juicy, enveloping and delicious, doling out succulent black cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and baking spice alongside velvety tannins. Thanks to the estate's vineyards north of Montalcino, it has freshness and mid-term staying power. Drink 2022–2030. (Editors’ Choice)

Cellar master Daniele Zefferini calls the 2015 ‘a bit unnatural’ in that the extreme ripeness of grapes rarely corresponds to the high level of acidity. Grapes were picked mid-September to preserve freshness. Indeed, the Riserva is full-bodied, even rich, with a significant charge of fruit. Yet it remains tightly corseted, orderly and bright. Blood orange and sweet cherry are infused with liquorice, cocoa and an earthy overlay in moderated precision. Ample, commanding tannins are grippy, and a steely backbone props up the dense, compact core. This has everything in place to age gracefully.

Fuligni's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and alluring, pulling me closer to the glass with each swirl, as a mix of ripe black cherry, rosemary, smoke, and moist earth lift from the glass, with sweet florals and a bit of animal musk developing over time. On the palate, it glides across the senses like silk, with ripe dark red fruits paving the way for sweet spice, as saline-minerals slowly saturate in a display that was perfectly balanced and not missing a single step. The finish is long, showing the first notes of tannic heft, with dried red fruits and minerals. The 2015 Fuligni Brunello balances its beautifully ripe fruit with classic tannins and a truly gorgeous perfumed character. It's sure to have a lot of fans, and as it youthfully closes up in the glass. I can imagine a long life ahead for it.

Fuligni is on a short list of the best wine estates in Montalcino. The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is fragrant and delicate, showing a level of precision and elegance that pushes the limits of this terrific vintage. The wine is fresh and buoyant with ample primary fruit and acidity to carry it over multiple decades of cellar aging. The bouquet reveals a slow succession of wild berry, rose, crushed flowers and graphite-like aromas with spice and licorice. The mouthfeel is structured, firm and built to last.

Varietal: Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively – full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

Tuscany is probably Italy's most important and widely respected wine region, with a history which stretches back almost three thousand years, and a set of fine grape varietals which produce some of the most delicious quality white and red wines in the world. Sangiovese and Vernaccia varietal grapes are grown all over this expansive region, and the way they are handled, aged and processed varies from town to town. The beautiful hot climate of Tuscany helps these grapes reach full ripeness, despite the fact the soil of the region is generally problematic for the vintners who work there. Despite this, there is a dedication to quality and flavor in Tuscany which is more or less unmatched anywhere else in Italy, and a great mix of strong tradition and willingness to experiment and think outside the box which has been a wonderful recipe for success in the region.

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
