The 2019 Syrah on Sandstone The Landscape Series is more backward on the nose compared to other cuvées, the scorched earth and terra-cotta scents filtering through the broody black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, with supple tannins, fine acidity and a liberal sprinkling of white pepper toward the finish. Very fine, but give it another year in bottle.

A fragrant skein winds through this wine, with wafts of burning sage, spicy cedar and a touch of mesquite smoke. Well-meshed and polished, with fine tannins and pleasingly plump juiciness to the flavors of mulled black cherry, plum reduction and red licorice. Drink now through 2029. 217 cases made, 10 cases imported.
Winery
Violets and pomegranate lead to a light, peaty reduction and sweet spices like sumac and cinnamon for an intense nose. The palate is silky and opulent, with hints of dark chocolate and a waxy grip that works alongside fresh acidity to add tension and structure.

Varietal: Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Country: South Africa

With its hot, long summers and oceanic winds from both the west and the east, South Africa is something of a haven for a wide range of imported grape varietals. Since the mid-18th century, the country has been associated with some very fine wines made using complex and careful blending techniques, with one of the most famous and widely loved early examples being constructed from Pontac, Muscadel and Chenin Blanc varietals. Since those colonial days, the regions around Cape Town have proven again and again to be fantastic areas for producing interesting and delicious wines, with many of the best examples of Champagne style sparkling wines originating from these fertile lands. From the scorchingly hot regions of Orange Rivers, to the far cooler and temperate appellations in Walker Bay, South Africa has developed a booming wine industry responsible for many of the finest New World wines available anywhere across the globe.

Excellent Syrah. Somewhere between an old-world Northern Rhône and an Australian Shiraz—concentrated and richly fruited but also expressive of some of the nice game and florals.
