A graceful Champagne, with a pleasantly round creaminess, finely balanced by the vivid acidity. The lacy mousse carries a delicate mesh of poached apricot, madeleine, ground ginger and chalk-tinged mineral. Disgorged May 2017. Drink now through 2022. 700 cases imported.

Very nicely captured fragrance here, plus subtly complex minerals and lemon/lime notes with a yeasty thread too; very pure. The palate's built in subtle layers, with initial crisp lemon and grapefruit flavors wrapped in toasty grilled almonds. Really fine, delicate and focused. Drink now.

Disgorged in November 2019, the new release of Chiquet's NV Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs d'Aÿ is pretty, bursting with scents of apple blossom, crisp orchard fruit, fresh peach and warm bread. Medium-bodied, ample and pillowy, with a charming core of fruit, bright acids and a pinpoint mousse, it's a bright, expressive bottling that I suspect will pick up a bit of additional depth with a year or two on cork.

Aÿ is better known for its Pinot Noir, so it's rare to find a blanc de blancs. Made in a rich style, it's full of grapefruit, citrus and apricot flavors. It balances this with taut, crisp acidity to produce a full wine that retains the dancing quality of a blanc de blancs.

There are few wine regions of the world with as much influence or fame as that of Champagne in France. The sparkling wines from this special area have long been associated with excellence and magnificent flavors, and much of their success has been down to the careful blending of fine grape varietals in order to achieve spectacular results. Most commonly, Champagne wines use both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietal grapes in more or less equal measures, often boosted by a small quantity of Pinot Meunier for extra bite. The Chardonnay varietal grapes offer their acidity and flavor to the bottle, and help with the dryness associated with quality in this type of wine.
