The NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru is simply fabulous. Deep, resonant and creamy to the core, the estate's Rosé captures the purest essence of Aÿ in its power and intensity. The wine continues to flesh out in the glass with a compelling melange of aromas, flavors and texture. Cherry pit, crushed flowers and mint are all laced into the super-expressive finish. This is another fabulous showing from Gatinois. The Rosé is 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay, with the addition of some still red Pinot. Initially quite powerful and vinous, the NV Brut Rose Grand Cru turns more delicate and feminine with time in the glass. The broad shoulders, minerality and power of Ay are vivid and beautifully expressive in the glass. Pure layers of intense minerality become utterly vivid on the delineated, polished finish. This release is approximately 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay with a dollop of still Pinot Noir vinified on the skins and aged in barrel. The base vintage is 2008, which gives the wine much of its energy, plus the addition of reserve wines from 2007 and 2006. This is Lot #: L3-09. Disgorged April 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.

Hints of slivered almond and pastry dough impart a subtle leesy edge to the flavors of poached peach and white cherry fruit, grated ginger and chalk found in this lip-smacking rosé Champagne with a lively bead. Disgorged June 2018. Drink now through 2023. 1,500 cases made, 75 cases imported.

Varietal: Champagne Blend

The careful blending of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietal grapes has long been the secret to the success of the famous sparkling wines of the Champagne region. The wines of this region have gone down in history as the finest example of France's sparkling produce, and the methods of processing the grapes in this region have been imitated in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are actually seven different grape varietals allowed to be included in a Champagne sparkling wine, although grape varietals such as Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Pinot Gris are used less and less commonly in its production. Whilst the Chardonnay varietal grapes offer their distinctive biscuit flavor and wonderful astringency, it is the Pinot Noir grapes (most commonly used for producing beautifully light red wines) which give the Champagne wines their length and backbone.

There are very few wine regions in the world quite as famous as Champagne, and the sparkling white wines which are produced there are drank and enjoyed all over the globe as a result of their excellent quality, distinctive features and their association with grandeur and celebration. Wineries have been operating in the cool, damp north-easterly region of Champagne for hundreds of years, and over time have mastered the art of making the most of the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Petit Meunier grape varietals which grow there across the rolling hillsides and kept in the region's unique 'Champagne caves'. Most commonly, these three varietals are blended together to produce the sparkling white wine, but the popularity of single variety Champagne wines are on the increase.

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year.
