Cheurlin produced just one and a half barrels of the 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru, and it is showing very well, unwinding to reveal aromas of sweet berry and cherry fruit mingled with exotic spices, loamy soil, dark chocolate and spices. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, with terrific concentration and a textural, multidimensional profile, it's built around succulent acids and ripe tannins. As usual, this derives from a tiny parcel in Les Cruots that was planted before 1915. ... More details

91-94 This too is restrained to the point of being all but mute as the nose only grudgingly divulges its aromas of softly spicy and floral purple fruit. The lush and generously proportioned flavors possess very good volume and power as well as mouthcoating texture where the dry extract does a good job of buffering the firm tannins shaping the muscular, serious and youthfully austere finish. Patience essential.

91-93 The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a ripe bouquet with floral scents of iris and violet infusing the precocious black cherry and blueberry fruit. This is a modern take on this grand cru. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins and a little confit-like in style. Displays commendable tension, although it needs lacks complexity and terroir expression on the finish compared to its peers.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Region: Burgundy

The beautiful region of Burgundy in France is famously home to some of the most exquisite red wines to be found anywhere on earth, and is most commonly associated with the silky, elegant and flavorful Pinot Noir varietal wines which are commonly produced there. However, the superb and mineral rich soils fed by the Rhone river, and the long hot summers and mild autumns of the region produce a wide variety of fine grapes, and as such, Burgundy produces plenty of different wines which are equally as good as the produce the region is famed for. The region of Burgundy itself has a wine-making history which stretches back at least two thousand years, and as such, it comes as no surprise that the wineries which fill the dozens of controlled appellations of the region rely heavily on traditional methods and techniques when it comes to producing their famous wines.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
