The 2015 Barbaresco Vanotu is the most potent of these 2015 Barbarescos from Pelissero. Here the flavors are dark and boldly sketched. Black cherry, plum, licorice, new leather and copious French oak are enshrouded by massive tannins. Today, the Vanotu comes across as a bit monolithic, but it also has tremendous depth and sheer concentration. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how the 2015 develops in the coming years. ... More details

Here's a style that combines racy acidity, ripe black cherry and plum fruit, and baking spice notes. Firm, with an extra layer of oaky tannins. There is plenty of wine behind the wood, and the lasting impression is of fruit and underbrush. Best from 2023 through 2040. 1,380 cases made, 400 cases imported.
Winery
Intense and broad color of a beautiful ruby red, it expresses itself on the nose with fruity notes of raspberry and cherry accompanied and well harmonized with persuasive woody notes such as vanilla. The aromatic frame, in addition to the typical hints of rose, is completed with notes of sage, mint, thyme, chamomile, constant over the years so as to almost constitute the trademark of this land. In the mouth it is velvety wide and enveloping with sweet and persistent tannins. The large polyphenolic structure of Nebbiolo and the right tannic acid ratio of this wine are certainly synonyms of long aging.

green grapes

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo grapes have been grown for centuries in the hilly region of northern Italy, and have more recently started to appear in many New World countries, too, where modern vintners have expressed great enthusiasm for their fine characteristics. Their fame and popularity is widely known, and the Nebbiolo varietal is recognized as the grape responsible for producing the legendary fine wines of Italy. Indeed, this grape is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, ranging from truffle and prune, to tobacco and violets, making the wines they produce a sensory delight which simply get better the longer they are aged. The grapes also lend a beautifully pale red color to their wines, which helped secure their place as some of the finest and most elegant to be found anywhere on earth.

Region: Piedmont

Situated in the north-western part of Italy, the region of Piedmont is known worldwide and is highly respected for the quality of the wines produced there. Many of the most successful sub-regions in Piedmont produce many of the world's finest red wines, such as those made from the excellent Nebbiolo grape varietal in areas such as Barolo and Barbaresco. However, the historic wineries which typify this region use a relatively wide variety of grapes, including Dolcetto and Barbera for their red wines, which are typically aged and have a delightful velvety character. Piedmont isn't all about beautifully complex red wines, though, as it is also famed for high quality, elegant sparkling wines, notably the Asti wines made with the white Moscato grape. The region benefits from a range of terroirs which are often well expressed in the sparkling wines, and a wonderfully consistent climate ideal for vineyard cultivation.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
