The 2022 Riesling Kabinett Jean Baptiste is almost entirely from the Pettenthal but was fermented in several bins according to the different plots. Pure and flinty on the finely intense nose, the wine is light, lush and savory on the palate, vibrantly fresh and saline, with fine mineral grip and a remarkably characterful finish. 10.5% stated alcohol. The 2022 Riesling Jean Baptiste Kabinett is named after the founder of the estate, a banker who sold his business and bought both Rothenberg and Engelsberg with the proceeds in 1890, believing this spot to be utterly unique. Hasselbach calls this wine the liquid calling card of the estate, its most important wine commercially. The fruit is sourced mainly from the cooler parts of Pettenthal, closer to the river. The tell-tale red stone savoriness segues seamlessly into bright lemon. The palate is rounded, juicy and full-fruited, channeling yellow apple and ripest lemon. This is joyful and vivid. Johannes is happy to have achieved lightness in 2022 and an easy balance of freshness for the 25 g/l of residual sweetness. The 2022 is a true Kabinett with a zesty finish. (Medium)

30th anniversary bottling! Always a pleasure and always great value for Riesling-lovers, the grapes for Jean-Baptiste are grown on the lower terraces of Gunderloch's three top vineyard sites: Nierstein Hipping, Nierstein Pettenthal and Nackenheim Rothenberg (all grand cru sites). Technically a feinherb style, or "balanced off-dry” at about 22-24g/l RS every year. This is a wine we've used again and again to introduce consumers to the joys of German Riesling.

Varietal: Riesling

The pale skinned fruits of the Riesling grapevine have been grown in and around Germany's Rhine Valley for centuries, and contributed much to the country's wine culture. Today, Riesling grapes are grown and processed in several countries around the world, where they are prized for their ability to grow well in colder climates, and their unique flavors and characteristics. Riesling grapes produce an impressive array of wines, including fine semi sweet and dessert wines, to excellent dry white wines and sparkling varieties, all which allow the grape to shine through as a premier example of an excellent white wine varietal. One of the things which makes Riesling such a special grape is the fact that it is highly 'terroir expressive', meaning that the features of the land it is grown on can come across well in the flavors and aromas in the wine. As such, it isn't unusual to find flavors of white stone, or smoky ash-like notes in a fine Riesling alongside the more usual orchard fruit flavors more commonly associated with good white wines.

Region: Rheingau / Rheinhessen

The beautiful region of Rheingau in Germany is home to many of the country's most characterful and delicious wines. With a wine history which extends back several centuries, the wineries of this region have generations of experience and expertise when it comes to dealing with their distinctive and flavorful grape varietals, and consistently produce wines which remain popular with global audiences. With Riesling making up for the majority of grapes growing in the region, Rheingau vintners make the most of the cooler climate and high levels of moisture on the valley sides to bring out the best flavors of this grape, as well as allowing it to express the finest features of the terroir. However, plenty of other Germanic and imported grape varietals flourish there, and today the region produces a relatively large range of excellent white wines which are steadily becoming more recognized internationally.

Country: Germany

If German wine has had something of a bad reputation in the past, it may well be the fault of the fact that for a long time now, the Germans have simply kept all the best produce to themselves. Visit any town or village in wine producing regions of Germany, and you'll be faced with a stunning array of extremely high quality wines, each matched with local dishes and full of distinct character and flavor. As white wine production makes up for about two-thirds of all Germany's wine industry, this is by far the most visible and widely enjoyed type of wine, but one should not overlook the quality and range of rosé and red wines on offer from this fascinating country. In particular, the Spatburgunder wines (the German name for Pinot Noir) are generally of an exceptionally high quality, being full of dark, intense hedgerow fruit flavors and exciting spicy notes with a silky smooth finish.
