Appropriate to this wine's name, a vein of singed earth trails from nose to finish, mingling into delicate notes of vanilla, anise and black pepper. Penetrating flavors of preserved black cherry and plum are plump but fresh, edged by lifted acidity and fine, persistent tannins. More approachable in youth than Colombo's other 2017 Cornas, it can be enjoyed now through 2035. (Editors' Choice) ... More details

Solidly built, with a cedar and alder frame inlaid along the edges of the pure plum and cassis core, while hints of bay leaf, olive and sweet tobacco unwind slowly through the finish. A late flicker of iron keeps this grounded. Best from 2021 through 2037. 1,400 cases made, 850 cases imported.

Dark violet. Intense cherry and dark berry preserve aromas are complemented by hints of cracked pepper, pungent flowers and baking spices. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering pliant bitter cherry, blueberry, violet pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen and turn sweeter on the back half. Supple tannins build on a long, spice-tinged finish that leaves behind dark chocolate and candied violet flourishes.
Winery
A deep ruby-black color with purple hints. On the nose, blackcurrant, dark cherries, and blackberries, with spices, licorice, and cocoa. A very rich mouthfeel with flavors of black fruit, jam, vanilla, spice and mineral notes.

Varietal: Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Region: Rhone Valley

There are few wine regions in the world with a history as long and illustrious as that of the Rhone Valley in France. For over two thousand years, wines have been produced in this region, benefited by the excellent, mineral-rich soils of the region, and the varied climate which allows a wide range of grape varietals to grow. The Rhone Valley is now split into two quite separate regions, with the north part being characterized by its cooler, continental climate and the limited number of grape varietals grown, and the southern sub-region being perfect for growing a wide range of grapes, and producing an exciting number of different wine styles. The Rhone Valley is associated with elegant, flavorful wines, and certain grape varietals such as Viognier and Syrah, which are adept at expressing the finer features of their terroir.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
