From the Chaillot lieu-dit, the 2015 Cornas Les Ruchets is slightly more firm and focused, yet still offers sensational depth of fruit and richness. Blackberry liqueur, pen ink, cracked pepper, and hints of flowers all give way to a powerful, concentrated, opulent Cornas that has the fruit and texture to drink nicely today, yet the underlying structure to keep for two decades or more. Like the La Louvée, it spent 23 months in 15% new French oak, with the balance in neutral barrels.

Voluptuous black-plum and bramble-berry flavors are accented by nuances of cocoa, charcuterie and olive in this richly composed wine. It's full bodied, but not brawny, offering plush layers of fruit squared off by a grip of firm, penetrating tannins. Hold until 2020, and it should improve for at least another decade after. The 2015 Cornas les Ruchets shows magnificent sandalwood aromas to go along with a plush, rich mouthfeel and a long, silky finish. Along the way it offers hints of cassis, crushed stone and roasted meat, plus some subdued spice notes. It should drink well for 10 years or more.

Inky ruby. Highly perfumed cassis, boysenberry, licorice, smoked meat and mineral scents show excellent detail. Densely packed and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated flavors of ripe black and blue fruits, vanilla and violet pastille. Shows impressive depth on the persistent finish, which features harmonious tannins and a vibrant echo of smoky minerality.

A bold, round style of Cornas. Abundant aromas of ripe, dark plums, cherries and dark-spiced chocolate. The tannins have a velvety, fine-grained feel. Round, long and smooth with sweet, rich, dark-fruit flavors. Drink or hold.
Winery
A superb, deep black cherry color. On the nose, complex and elegant with notes of spices, violets, and black fruit and vanilla. On the palate, powerful, structured notes of black fruit, herbs, white pepper and blueberry.

Varietal: Syrah

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines. It is also regularly used as a blending grape, where it is prized for its ability to add a bold and strong, spicy punch to mellow, blended wines.

Region: Rhone Valley

In southern France, one of the primary wine regions responsible for the production of a fine and varied range of wines is the Rhone Valley. Split into two large sub-regions, this expansive valley benefits from micro-climates which allow the wineries to grow a vast array of fine grape varietals. The northern region is the more limited one in regards to the amount of varietals grown, focusing predominantly on raising excellent quality Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines for their distinctive and elegant range of wines. The southern region, on the other hand, has a beautifully Mediterranean climate, and is home to dozens of grape varietals which are used to produce white, red and rosé wines, alongside some of the most famous and widely loved blended wines in the world.

Country: France

It is widely understood and accepted that the finest wines in the world come out of France. Whether you are drinking a vintage bottle from one of the famed Grand Cru wineries of Bordeaux - such as Chateau Margaux or Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - or a more simple and affordable bottle from one of the lesser known appellations in Burgundy, the likelihood is that the wine is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, and has a fine, balanced structure typical of almost all French produce. This reputation for excellence is taken extremely serious by the French, with dozens of regularly updated laws and regulations ensuring the quality and accurate labeling of wines. Such dedication and passion for fine wine, representative of the region in which it is produced, means customers can be assured that when they buy a bottle from France, they are buying something almost certain to please and delight.
