Stony-mineral and flinty complexity here. This delivers a very taut, very compact and composed palate with tightly bedded tannins. Really dense and intense. The precision and spicy fruits are wildly compelling. Elegant with power here again! Sexy, pure syrah, matured in 100 per cent barriques, from a small 0.4-ha plot, planted in 1991. Barrel sample. ... Bright purple. Pungent cherry, blueberry and violet aromas are complemented by hints of exotic spices, potpourri and smoky minerals. Succulent and penetrating in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated, appealingly sweet black and blue fruit flavors, a hint of vanilla and a violet pastille quality that builds steadily on the back half. Hefty and broad yet energetic as well, finishing with mounting tannins and outstanding, floral-driven persistence.

Intensely penetrating layers of sweet spice, vanilla and smoke lend an unabashedly flashy demeanor to this unusually opulent Northern Rhône Syrah. Matured in 100% new oak, it will need some time in the cellar to allow its core of ripe blackberry and plum flavors plus nuances of mint and bramble to peek through. It's quite decadent now but should ease up a bit from 2023. (Cellar Selection)
Winery
Finesse, balance and intensity summarize this wine. Supple tannins and aromatic complexity reminds us the beauty of this terroir. Dark purple with potent aromas of blackberry liqueur, licorice and floral oils that are complicated by a peppery note and a hint of vanillin oak. Dense, round and seamless on the palate, showing a suave, velvety texture to its flavors of dark berry compote and cola. The long, sweet finish features impressive energy, lush tannins and an exotic floral pastille flourish. Pairs with red meats, stuffed eggplant or strong cheeses.

Varietal: Syrah

There continues to be much debate surrounding the name of the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, with many experts still quite unsure which came first. Indeed, even the origins of this varietal are more or less unknown, despite it being most commonly associated with the Rhone Valley of France, and New World countries, most notably Australia. However, its popularity and unique characteristics have seen it planted all over the world, where it continues to impress with its powerful flavors and wonderfully spicy notes of pepper and clove. Shiraz/Syrah wines are renowned also for their versatility, and are regularly used in single variety still and sparkling wines, as well as blended and oak aged wines which demonstrate its ability to express its terroir and secondary flavors very well.

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosé wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
