Almost equal proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc have given a beautifully perfumed wine. It has quite a structure for a second wine, although this is balanced with the intense black fruits. The touches of wood have given this wine its light spice flavor. Drink from 2023. (Cellar Selection)

Extremely perfumed and beautiful with currant and cherry aromas and just a hint of flowers. Medium body, very fine tannins and sheer polish and beauty. Lovely fruit. Want to drink it now, but it’ll be better in 2019. Second wine of Cheval Blanc.

The 2014 Le Petit Cheval, a blend of 52% Merlot and 48% Cabernet Franc, has a crisp, tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, black olive (as per its primeur sample) and a subtle estuarine undercurrent that becomes more conspicuous with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit intermingling with white pepper, clove and a pinch of Chinese five spice. It has moderate depth, a sense of approachability in that the tannins do not really grip the mouth, and the latter half appears appealingly smooth and harmonious. There are no rough edges here, just a touch of frisson on the saline finish. Very fine, a Saint Emilion Deuxième Vin to drink over the next decade.

Pretty, with a light sanguine edge to the mix of red currant and damson plum fruit, backed by singed vanilla and cedar hints. A whiff of black tea adds a perfumy detail. Has some weight but this stays on the rounded side in terms of feel. Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2018 through 2024. 2,500 cases made.

52% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Franc. Accounts for 25% of the production. Almost the same blend as the grand vin and very much in little brother mould. Perfumed and floral with a menthol note. Long and linear. Tannins finely woven. Elegant and harmonious. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030.
