As its name suggests, this wine is made exclusively from fruit from the comune, or village, of Barolo. The Marchesi di Barolo 2016 Barolo del Comune di Barolo shows more focus and linearity compared to the Barolo Tradizione from the same vintage. The 2016 Barolo del Comune di Barolo is beautifully layered in the glass. Impeccable in its balance, the 2016 opens gracefully, showing soft contours, bright floral notes and expressive red berry fruit. The 2016 is a very pretty, mid-tier Barolo that is sure to find many admirers. It is also one of the best wines I have tasted from Marchesi di Barolo.

Black-skinned berry, menthol and exotic spice aromas meld with whiffs of toasted hazelnut. On the firm palate, fine-grained tannins accompany dried black cherry, tobacco and licorice before a drying finish. Drink 2023–2028.

Deep ruby red with orange highlights. An intense rose bouquet with scents of liquorice and spice. Full bodied, austere, yet elegant. A pleasant “goudron” becomes noticeably apparent after 7-8 years of aging. Rich, dry and deep in flavor, Barolo is an excellent accompaniment to red meats and spicy cheeses.

Impeccable in its balance, the 2016 opens gracefully, showing soft contours, bright floral notes and expressive red berry fruit. The 2016 is a very pretty, mid-tier Barolo that is sure to find many admirers. It is also one of the best wines I have tasted from Marchesi di Barolo.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.

The region is located at the foothills of the Alps, close to the French and Swiss borders, and benefits from some interesting micro-climates formed by its proximity to the mountain range. The key grapes for the fine red wines of Piedmont are Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera – all powerful varietals which are packed full of a range of fruit flavors and which have an affinity for oak making them ideal for aging When it comes to the sparkling Asti, wineries cultivate plenty of Moscato grapes, whose relative transparency make them ideal for expressing their terroir and providing some interesting flavors in the bottle.

They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
