The 2016 Barolo Brunate is the most Nebbiologgiante of these new releases from Marco Marengo. As you would expect of a wine from the Brunate cru, the wine opens to a dark, sultry and beautifully saturated color with red brick or crimson highlights. The bouquet follows the Nebbiolo playlist faithfully with bright aromas of dried cherry, dark fruits, plums, moist earth, licorice and savory tobacco. Whereas Marengo's other two Barolo releases (the Barolo classico and the Bricco delle Viole) offer a stronger floral signature with hints of white pepper, this Barolo from a one-hectare plot (with limestone calcareous soils at 350 meters above sea level) is focused on dark fruit, spice and leather. It also shows a significant tannic structure and dense fiber that arguably makes this a more important or full-bodied alternative. In short, there is considerably more power and strength in this beautiful wine, and it should hold in your cellar for 20 years or more. Only 5,000 bottles were made. ... More details

This is really something for the appellation this year with blue fruit, minerals, stones and oyster-shell undertones. Fresh rose petals, too. Full-bodied with a compact palate and chewy, powerful tannins that are tight and impressive. One for the cellar. Try after 2024.

The 2016 Barolo Brunate is soft, perfumed and very pretty. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and anise all grace this expressive, mid-weight Barolo. Overall, this is a decidedly lightweight, perfumed style of Brunate, a site where the wines tend to be richer, deeper, and more powerful; I would prefer to drink it over the next decade, give or take.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The name 'Nebbiolo' means 'fog' in Italian, and there is some debate as to the origin of this unusual name. However, many people claim it has something to do with the milky white dust which covers these dark, round grapes as they begin to reach maturity. The Nebbiolo grapes are most renowned for their inclusion in the finest wines of Italy, where they are allowed to age and mellow their strong tannins, producing wonderfully complex wines packed with dense, interesting flavors Most commonly, Nebbiolo wines hold beautiful tones of truffle, violet and prunes, and are highly aromatic and mellow on the palate. Their popularity and fame has helped them become established in several New World countries, where they continue to seduce and fascinate wine drinkers looking for an elegant, sophisticated wine which packs in plenty of wonderful flavors

Region: Piedmont

For hundreds of years, the beautiful alpine region of Piedmont in north-west Italy has been producing excellent quality red wines, and some of the most characterful sparkling white wines to have ever come out of the Old World. The region is dominated by the mighty Alps which form the border between Italy, France and Switzerland, and the Moscato grapes that are grown in the foothills of this mountain range carry much of the Alps' flavors in their fruit, and are fed by crystal clear mountain waters. However, it is the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which are the real stars of this region, and the highly respected wineries which cover much of Piedmont have generations of experience when it comes to processing and aging these grape varietals to produce the superb wines which come out of appellations such as Barolo and Barberesco.

Country: Italy

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
