This top-of-the-line Montepulciano impresses in rich aromas of cocoa, cigar box, dill and anise that meld into a deep well of brandy-soaked black cherry and dark plum. It's full and enveloping on the palate yet foursquare in nature, built by small-grained, polished tannins and integrated acidity that frame densely packed dark fruit. Spiced plums linger on the long finish, indicating that this will hold well in the cellar. Drink 2022–2030 at least. (Cellar Selection) ... More details

Polished nose of ripe plums, vanilla, milk chocolate and some dried fruit peel, too. It’s full-bodied and creamy with velvety, smooth tannins. Lots of chocolate and plummy layers that are smooth and decadent without being overripe. Will be even better after another two or three years in bottle.

A rich, medium- to full-bodied red, with flashy vanilla and oak spice on the nose that transitions to a subtle, aromatic thread on the palate, winding through flavors of saturated blackberry, pipe smoke, fig cake and a touch of ganache. Fresh and lightly mouthwatering, with fine-grained tannins and a tang of iron-laced mineral emerging on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2030. 75 cases imported.

The 2015 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva opens slowly in the glass, as citrus-tinged blackberries give way to exotic spices, hints of cocoa and camphor. This is velvety in texture with a rich and dense display of ripe dark fruits and licorice. Its web of grippy tannins are hardly noticeable, until it’s too late, as the cheeks pucker under the 2015’s youthful structure. Even though it is monolithic today, there are depths still unseen here that will require further cellaring to come forward.
Winery
Rich and ripe dark cherry fruit, along with attractive spicy, smoky notes. Fleshy and full, with surprising depth and length.

Varietal: Montepulciano

Montepulciano grapes have been grown in Italy for at least two thousand years, and recent decades have seen vintners in several New World countries experimenting with this particular varietal. Its popularity stems from the fact that it produces high and reliable yields, meaning it is a great grape to grow for those wishing to produce lots of wine at a consistent quality. Indeed, the Montepulciano grape in grown almost all over Italy, as this hardy varietal can thrive in many different climatic conditions. The grapes themselves are renowned for producing wines which are relatively light in body, as the low acidity in the grapes mean that wines made from them are very smooth, soft and drinkable. They usually hold warm, ripe flavors of plum and other autumn fruits, and are often very dark in color

Country: Italy

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
