Aromas of rose petal, grilled herb, camphor and a whiff of pipe tobacco shape the nose. Elegantly structured, the smooth, delicious palate doles out crushed raspberry, cherry compote, cinnamon and licorice while taut, fine-grained tannins provide finesse and support. This exclusive vineyard is known for sandy soils resulting in soft and silky wines, and the 2015 Barolo Cannubi is delicate indeed. (The nearby Cerequio vineyard, by contrast, results in more austere, thick and dense wines.) This Barolo is aged in botte grande for 24 months, producing an expressive and tight wine, slightly shy at first, revealing forest berry, blue lavander and licorice. This warm vintage does offer substance and volume. The Barolo Cannubi was not produced in 2014.

The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is a very pretty wine. Sweet floral, tobacco and cedar notes are all beautifully lifted in this expressive, mid-weight wine. It would be nice to see a little more freshness, but all things considered, the 2015 is very nicely done, especially within the context of the year.
Wine Spectator
This young Barolo combines cherry fruit with oak notes of vanilla and toast, adding an extra layer of tannins. Floral, licorice and tar accents emerge as this plays out on the palate, leaving a complex, if compact, finish. Best from 2022 through 2037. 500 cases made, 100 cases imported.
Winery
Garnet red with tawny highlights, the wine has licorice and spice aromas and flavors on an elegant full body with the firm tannins typical of this vineyard.

green grapes

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is not necessarily a particularly easy grape to cultivate. Indeed, its very late ripening time often means that yield is very low, and they are also quite susceptible to various diseases and forms of rot. However, in their native Italy and in many other countries around the world, wineries persevere with this varietal due to the fact that few other grapes can produce wines as wonderful, complex and flavorful as those made with the Nebbiolo grape. These grapes offer a beautifully pale red juice, packed full of intense flavors such as truffle, violet and prune, making them a real treat for serious wine drinkers looking for a sensory experience not to be forgotten. They are also renowned for their affinity for aging, which allows their strong tannins to mellow and compliment their stunning flavor.

Region: Piedmont

n Italy, the region most closely associated with excellent quality red wines and characterful sparkling wines is Piedmont. This alpine region is located in the north-west of the country, and features beautiful foothills of the impressive mountain range which forms the nearby border between Italy, France and Switzerland. Wineries in Piedmont work with the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which thrive in the warm, dry summers and cooler autumns, as well as the beautifully expressive Moscato grapes which are used for the sparkling Asti wines the region is famed for. For generations, these wineries have perfected the art of aging their red wines, and blending grape varietals to get the most out of each one, leading to a region known all over the world for the exceptional quality of its produce.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
