Aged 18 months in primarily French oak, the 2004 Shiraz G.A.M. is an exceptional example of a precise yet full-flavored, concentrated Shiraz. Its gorgeous perfume of blueberries, blackberries, camphor, licorice, and pain grille is followed by an inky/blue/purple-colored wine offering superb purity, full-bodied richness, and gorgeous depth as well as texture. A stellar showing, the 2004 Mitolo Shiraz G.A.M. is still young and fresh with vibrant, pure black fruits, coffee bean, violets and flowers on the nose. I love the lift and clarity to the wine and it showed beautifully over the two days the bottle was open. On the palate, it’s full bodied with stunning balance, a lush, full texture, fresh acids, juicy fruit and a long finish. Given where the ’03 is right now and how much younger this wine seems, it could have a long life ahead of it. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this still going strong in another 10 to 12 years. Impressive!
Winery
Intense, complex and bright nose of black cherry and blackened cedar wood with complex dried Mediterranean herbs. The palate is a true reflection of one of the great vintages of the region with immense yet savory flavors of vanilla, dark plums and dry, earthy flavors reminiscent of the clay soil from which it is grown.

Varietal: Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Region: Fleurieu

On the Fleurieu Peninsula of southern Australia, there are now dozens of wineries making the most of the excellent unique features the region provides, and such wineries are consistently impressing the wine world with their excellent produce. Most notably, Fleurieu benefits from a Mediterranean style climate, offering great warmth and exposure to sunshine throughout the days, tempered by brisk oceanic breezes and a wide range of micro-climates, which allow vintners to produce a wide range of wine styles. As with many parts of southern Australia, the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varietals make up for most of the winery's produce, although recent years have seen much experimentation with a wide range of grapes, making Fleurieu one of the most diverse and exciting wine regions in Australia.

Country: Australia

With over sixteen thousand hectares of Australian land now under vine, Australia has become something of a world leader in regards to wine production. One of Australia's key attributes to their success has been their willingness to leave traditional vineyard practices to one side, and develop techniques which are perfectly suited to a New World country. Modern Australian wineries take into consideration the climate and the unique soil types which cover much of their country, and have had fantastic results from cross-breeding programs and blending practices which make the most of the grape varietals which thrive most successfully there, notably the Shiraz and Chardonnay grapes. In recent years, Australia has been lauded as the 'most influential' wine producing country in the world, and the rest of the New World is looking down under for inspiration, and the ability to produce comparable fine wines on their own terrain.
