A rich blend of plum sauce and grilled herbs is complemented by hints of licorice and spiced blood orange as the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Della Raunate blossoms in the glass. This is silky, verging on velvety, with a dense wave of ripe red and black fruits that flow across a stream of brisk acidity. Its minerality comes forward on the finish, mingling with edgy tannins, yet the palate remains wonderfully refreshed through it all. This is a beautiful interpretation of Tavernelle terroir. Well done. ... More details

The Mocali 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna delle Raunate carries lots of thick fruit weight that wraps over the palate in its entirety. There are hints of candied cherry, raspberry confit and baked plum. These dark fruit nuances give lift and verticality to the bouquet, but the wine is otherwise very broad and rich in terms of mouthfeel.

Lots of dark fruit, such as black cherries and blue plums, as well as purple flowers, followed by a touch of cedar and coffee bean. Medium body with balanced, creamy acidity and firm tannins on the palate. Yet, it’s tight now. Better after 2027

Rated 92 by Winery
Rated 92 - Aromas of camphor, dog rose, exotic brown spice and botanical herb come to the forefront. The sleek, rather accessible palate offers prune, licorice, grilled Porcini and mocha alongside polished, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2026–2032. - Kerin O’Keefe

Varietal: Sangiovese

Sangiovese qualifies as one of the truly ancient grape varietals of the Old World, and whilst it is now grown in several countries across the globe, it very much remains a classic grape of Italian wine making. One of the key features of the Sangiovese grape varietal is that it can act as a 'sponge' of flavors when maturing in oak, taking on the earthy and vanilla tones present in the barrel. These dark grapes produce a wide variety of fine wines, from the lively and strawberry flavored young wines which are growing in popularity, to the complex, spicy and delicious aged wines which are treasured by drinkers and collectors worldwide. With a history which dates back to before the times of the Roman empire, Sangiovese will no doubt continue to be a favorite for wineries wishing to plant grapes which will guarantee quality, and will always attract wine lovers worldwide.

Region: Tuscany

Tuscany is probably Italy's most important and widely respected wine region, with a history which stretches back almost three thousand years, and a set of fine grape varietals which produce some of the most delicious quality white and red wines in the world. Sangiovese and Vernaccia varietal grapes are grown all over this expansive region, and the way they are handled, aged and processed varies from town to town. The beautiful hot climate of Tuscany helps these grapes reach full ripeness, despite the fact the soil of the region is generally problematic for the vintners who work there. Despite this, there is a dedication to quality and flavor in Tuscany which is more or less unmatched anywhere else in Italy, and a great mix of strong tradition and willingness to experiment and think outside the box which has been a wonderful recipe for success in the region.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
