The 2015 growing season was very warm but not as hot as 2009, according to Maria Cristina Oddero. Winter snow and spring rain helped curb water stress during the dry summer. Just released, the estate’s Vigna Mondoca will need a couple more years to fully express itself. Nevertheless, its compelling complexity is already evident. Darkly fruited, it offers up hints of shaded forest, wet earth, chestnut, herbal medicine cabinet, dark chocolate and smoky ash. The palate is vertical and grippy with depth of fruit to balance. Full but not lush, there is no excess fat or lack of acidity. Mineral-driven on the finish. ... More details

Here's a wine that brings on the best of the 2015 vintage. This growing season that will be remembered for sunshine and warmth is distinguished by rich and concentrated fruit. The 2015 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Mondoca shows extra intensity and complexity with a quick assembly of wild fruit, rose, tarry smoke and flinty mineral aromas. There is a lot of depth and, more importantly, volume in this Barolo. The wine definitely veers toward the blacker and plummier side of the Nebbiolo spectrum. There is a lot of beautiful meat on these strong bones.

The 2015 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is gentle, suave and caressing to the point it is surprisingly enjoyable even at this very early stage, bright acids and youthful tannins notwithstanding. Of course, the 2015 will be even better in a few years' time. All the Rionda signatures are front and center. The red berry fruit, the kirsch, the hard candy and the sweet floral nuances that are so typical of this great Serralunga sites meld together effortlessly. The 2015 is an absolutely exquisite wine that is more finesse than power. What a great way to round out this tasting of new releases!

This red has some heft and power behind its plum, cherry, currant, menthol and mineral flavors. Solidly built, yet balanced, ending with a long, refreshing aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2042. 300 cases made.

This is really serious, with such a classic spin to the clean and modern winemaking. It shows plenty of ripe-plum, tar and cedar character. It’s full-bodied and chewy with lots going on. Tannic at the end, but the attractive fruit balances it out. Still needs time. Try after 2024.

Underbrush, camphor and oak-driven spice aromas waft out of the glass along with whiffs of espresso. Structured and enveloping, the dense, full-bodied palate features dried black cherry, licorice and truffle before a tobacco close. Tightly knit, close-grained tannins provide the assertive backbone. Drink 2025–2033.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo grapes have been grown for centuries in the hilly region of northern Italy, and have more recently started to appear in many New World countries, too, where modern vintners have expressed great enthusiasm for their fine characteristics. Their fame and popularity is widely known, and the Nebbiolo varietal is recognized as the grape responsible for producing the legendary fine wines of Italy. Indeed, this grape is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, ranging from truffle and prune, to tobacco and violets, making the wines they produce a sensory delight which simply get better the longer they are aged. The grapes also lend a beautifully pale red color to their wines, which helped secure their place as some of the finest and most elegant to be found anywhere on earth.

Region: Piedmont

For hundreds of years, the beautiful alpine region of Piedmont in north-west Italy has been producing excellent quality red wines, and some of the most characterful sparkling white wines to have ever come out of the Old World. The region is dominated by the mighty Alps which form the border between Italy, France and Switzerland, and the Moscato grapes that are grown in the foothills of this mountain range carry much of the Alps' flavors in their fruit, and are fed by crystal clear mountain waters. However, it is the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which are the real stars of this region, and the highly respected wineries which cover much of Piedmont have generations of experience when it comes to processing and aging these grape varietals to produce the superb wines which come out of appellations such as Barolo and Barberesco.

Country: Italy

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
