From the first pour, the rum influence shines above all else for this 95% rye, 5% malted barley whiskey. On the nose there’s raisins, molasses, and tiramisu, with only the herbal backbone giving away the whiskey’s main grain. The palate is similarly structured, the flavors leading with overripe banana, an unctuous sugary sweetness, and base notes of fennel, cinnamon, and mint. Whilst there are several strains of native grape varietals in the United States, it was the introduction of the European species which prompted the country to begin producing wines on a large scale.
