From three parcels totaling five acres. About half was planted in 2009 while the other half dates from the 1970s. The young vine parcel was put in by Pierre Jean behind the original Villa winery on the hillside back of Chavanay; the two older parcels are in the commune of Vérin. About 50% of this is raised in foudre, 25% in neutral demi-muids, and 25% in clay jars. Normally, there's no fining and one minimum filtration, but this depends on the year. Pierre Jean loves the textured fruit that Condrieu amply provides and aims to couple this with lift and freshness. Production averages 1,667 6-packs. The name comes from the post-WWII days, when the terraces behind Ampuis were largely abandoned and the locals took to growing vegetable gardens on the steep hillsides. Jardin referred to vegetables, not grapes.

green grapes

Varietal: Viognier

The green-skinned Viognier grape varietal has been around for centuries in France, with many people claiming that they were brought to the Rhone region from Croatia by ancient Romans who were impressed by its flavors and aromas. Today, they are grown in several different countries, although many wineries find them a difficult varietal to work with as they are highly susceptible to disease, and struggle in fluctuating climatic conditions. However, when the grapes are harvested at the right time, the wines they produce are of an exceptional quality. Their floral aromas are their main selling point, as these give an impression of sweetness over an otherwise dry and fruit-forward wine, and their crispness and low acidity makes them an ideal match for many international cuisines.

Region: Rhone Valley

The southern French wine region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers for over two thousand years, with the first grapevines of the region being cultivated in around 600 BCE when the ancient Greeks arrived with their knowledge of viticulture and eagerness to produce more wine. Today, the region is famed around the world for the excellence of its produce, and has dozens of wineries making the most of the wide range of grape varietals which flourish there. In the northern sub-region, the continental climate and brisk winds coming off the Central Massif allow wineries to grow a smaller range of varietals – predominantly Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier, whereas the southern, more Mediterranean sub-region allows far more range. Here, dozens of varietals are grown for the production of white, red and rosé wines, all packed full of flavor and able to express the unique terroir they are grown on.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
