There is a savory hint of dried tobacco leaf as well. The 2020 Barolo Cannubi is a young, promising wine. It shows terrific depth in the understated style of the year. Crushed flowers, cedar, tobacco, licorice and dried herbs fill out the layers effortlessly. Pliant and expressive, the Cannubi is super-classy, not to mention a pleasure to taste.

Pure and velvety, this balanced red offers cherry, plum, iron, leather and earth flavors, with vibrant acidity keeping it all defined, followed by a long aftertaste of fruit and mineral. Best from 2026 through 2043.

This is racy and fresh with dried strawberries, dark cherries, cocoa and light spices adding a dusty, earthy note to it. Medium- to full-bodied, broad and structured with taut, polished tannins. Yet it’s agile and fleshy with ripe red fruit and subtle chocolate undertones at the end. Long finish. Try after 2027.

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian.
