Based on the 2015 vintage and disgorged with around 30 grams per liter dosage, the latest release of Pol Roger's NV Demi Sec Rich is showing beautifully, offering up aromas of honeycomb, ripe pears, brioche, frangipane and candied peel. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's elegantly textural, with racy acids, nicely integrated sugar and a precise finish. This works very well with certain desserts—think fruit tarts made with flaky pâte sucrée—and will pick up additional complexity, making it even more versatile at the table, with bottle age. ... Demi-Sec is a fine style both as an apéritif and with fruit desserts. Its sweetness—softness, perhaps—is balanced by a crisp taste of lemon and acidity. This delicious, rich Champagne is ready to drink.

Launched in 2001, the Rich cuvée sits between sec and demi-sec in its sweetness, with 34 g/L of sugar bestowing rich notes of tarte tatin and sour honey, but far from overwhelming in its indulgence. A hard category to get right this, especially as most Champagnes rely more and more on natural ripeness, and have, as a result, lowered their dosage. Pol, needless to say, is spot on; the wine is very complete in its own right, but, most importantly, gastronomically intelligent and versatile. A generous 25% of reserve wine underlines the seriousness of intent, confirming this aspiration through the sheer depth and complexity of flavour on display. Drinking Window 2020 - 2025.

Light, bright yellow. Ripe pear and nectarine on the fragrant nose, with hints of lemon curd, honey and dried fig adding complexity. Shows very good depth and a supple texture, with sweet poached pear and pit fruit nectar flavors sharpened by a minerally element. Closes silky, broad and gently sweet, with a suave floral quality coming up late. This would make a fantastic pairing with blue cheeses.

Not a style that many produce these days. This has rich peach and berry aromas and flavors and delivers a sweet, creamy palate that has a place on the table with cheese and sweet courses. Drink now.
Wine Spectator
Creamy and lightly sweet, this finds balance from the citrusy acidity. Flavors of toasted brioche and nut play off the glazed apricot, pineapple and spun honey notes. Drink now. 150 cases imported.
Winery
The Cuvée Rich displays a superb yellow gold colour, with a discreet copper shimmer. It is deep, dense and bright. Tiny lingering bubbles break into a creamy, clear and diffused effervescence and form a continuous, full and delicate thread. At the outset, the nose is clear, elegant and open, mingling notes of dried fruits, sensuous floral fragrances, attractive woody scents and a slight vegetal hint. It then reveals a delicate spiciness and eloquent touches of sweetness. The attack is ample, powerful and complex and the wine is remarkable for its generosity as well as for its power, suppleness and balance. Its pleasing vivacity culminates in succulent fruity flavours together with spicy, soft and sensuous notes. The unmistakable sugariness harmonises well with all the other elements and does not affect the expression of the wine. With the fine taste of blond caramel to extend its intensity, the aftertaste is fresh and amazingly long.

Varietal: Champagne Blend

There are few wine regions of the world with as much influence or fame as that of Champagne in France. The sparkling wines from this special area have long been associated with excellence and magnificent flavors, and much of their success has been down to the careful blending of fine grape varietals in order to achieve spectacular results. Most commonly, Champagne wines use both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietal grapes in more or less equal measures, often boosted by a small quantity of Pinot Meunier for extra bite. The Chardonnay varietal grapes offer their acidity and flavor to the bottle, and help with the dryness associated with quality in this type of wine. The Pinot Noir, on the other hand, gives strength to the wine, and gives Champagne its distinctive 'length' of character.

Region: Champagne

The beautiful north-easterly region of Champagne in France is famous around the world for the production of the exquisite sparkling white wines which characterize the region. All over the globe, bottles of wine from Champagne are celebrated and enjoyed, and their fame has come about through generations of expertise and experimentation, and a dedication to quality which raises the bar for producers of sparkling wines everywhere. The vast majority of grapes grown in this special region are of the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Petit Meunier varietals, the principle grapes used for the production of Champagne sparkling white wines. The region itself is far cooler than many other important French wine regions, but this hasn't stopped the dozens of wineries in Champagne from making their distinctive and much-loved produce.
