Only made in the best years, the Prunotto 2016 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello shows classic lines, good sharpness and delicate aromas. The only thing lacking is intensity, and the rather subdued personality of this wine is reflected across the portfolio of new releases from this important estate. The wine gives a lot, but you end up wanting more. The delivery of fruit is simple and rather of fact with light structure and nice freshness. It will hopefully flesh out with more time in the bottle.

This has density and richness framing macerated plum, cherry, blackberry, leather, spice and a hint of toasty oak. Open yet also solidly structured, with a lingering, spicy aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2042. 40 cases imported.

I like the broody nose of ripe cherries and berries, together with some ripe-fig character. Medium-bodied and very silky. The tannins are pretty much sunk into the wine, leaving the rather exotic fruit to shine. Drink now.
Winery
Vigna Colonnello is garnet ruby red in color. The nose is complex offering aromas of spices, even exotic spices, dried flowers, and forest floor. Remarkable on the palate for the excellent concentration of refined tannins, supple, able to envelop the palate without being aggressive. The finish is long and persistent.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo grapes have been grown for centuries in the hilly region of northern Italy, and have more recently started to appear in many New World countries, too, where modern vintners have expressed great enthusiasm for their fine characteristics. Their fame and popularity is widely known, and the Nebbiolo varietal is recognized as the grape responsible for producing the legendary fine wines of Italy. Indeed, this grape is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, ranging from truffle and prune, to tobacco and violets, making the wines they produce a sensory delight which simply get better the longer they are aged. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
