Aromas of dried cherries with some spice and a hint of scorched orange rind. Medium-to full-bodied with a silky texture and an almost creamy mouth-feel. Intense, flavorful finish. The very fine tannins build a little towards the end. This has a lighter overall structure this year, but the intensity and focus and is not lacking. Try from 2024.

The 2018 Barolo Conca is dark and supple, with good depth, especially for the year. Succulent dark cherry, cloves, mocha, new leather and menthol all come together nicely in this mid-weight, approachable Barolo from Ratti. All the elements are nicely balanced throughout.

This Conca is stainless steel-fermented - including for the malolactic fermentation - macerated for three to four weeks with the traditional submerged cap. It's then aged half in barrique and half in 25hL Slavonian oak. A restrained floral rosebud character combines with strawberry fruit, while light extraction is well balanced by soft fruit concentration. It shows ripe, chewy tannins, crisp acidity and a tight finish. A good example of the 2018 vintage, with no dilution yet lovely lightness.

Broad and juicy, this reveals light plum, cherry and rose hip flavors, with accents of earth and eucalyptus. Firms up on the finish, so give this a year or two. Best from 2024 through 2038. 83 cases imported.
Winery
Conca is one of the oldest and most exclusive MGAs (special mention areas) of the entire Barolo zone. Already known by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of the Most Holy Annunciation; a particular bluish land and special microclimate that – alone in the Langhe district – allows for the growth of the famous Anemone Coronarie (poppy anemone) with its unmistakable reddish purple color. The Conca vineyard is quite small in extension, approx. 7000 m2 and is situated below the Annunziata cellar.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.

Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
