In a pretty bottle with a white wax capsule, the Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno 2019 Barolo Albarella has a vibrant, dark ruby color. There is a lot of intensity on the bouquet with dried cherry skin and macerated perfumes of crushed rose petal. You even get a hint of cherry cough drop. You hardly feel the tannins in this well-integrated wine, but there is evident structure and staying power. This is the second vintage produced of Albarella (with only 1,040 bottles made and sold in box sets with four different front labels). ... More details

The 2019 Barolo Albarella is impressive. Dark and yet wonderfully transparent, the Albarella offers up scents of wild cherry, underbrush, lavender, dark spice and menthol. Power but without excess weight. That's what comes to mind in this statuesque, pedigreed Barolo.
Winery
• 100% Nebbiolo. • In 2016, the family decided to rent a plot of 2900 square meters in the MGA of Barolo called Albarella. • The wine’s four different labels are meant to convey an appreciation for the variety of gifts bestowed by nature around the year. • 20% whole cluster with maceration in stainless steel, followed by 18-20 months aging in tonneaux. • 2018 was the first vintage of this wine and only 700 bottles were produced. • Each of the 4 bottles in the case features a different seasonal illustration by Maria Cristina Boero.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.

Region: Piedmont

Situated in the north-western part of Italy, the region of Piedmont is known worldwide and is highly respected for the quality of the wines produced there. Many of the most successful sub-regions in Piedmont produce many of the world's finest red wines, such as those made from the excellent Nebbiolo grape varietal in areas such as Barolo and Barbaresco. However, the historic wineries which typify this region use a relatively wide variety of grapes, including Dolcetto and Barbera for their red wines, which are typically aged and have a delightful velvety character. Piedmont isn't all about beautifully complex red wines, though, as it is also famed for high quality, elegant sparkling wines, notably the Asti wines made with the white Moscato grape. The region benefits from a range of terroirs which are often well expressed in the sparkling wines, and a wonderfully consistent climate ideal for vineyard cultivation.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
