Rich, savory red fruit with iron, licorice, dry earth and orange rind. Firm, dusty tannins with dry, spiced berries on a structured, medium- to full-bodied palate. Good length with a mineral quality at the end. Sangiovese. From organically grown grapes. Sustainable. Drink now but can hold for four to five years, too.

The 2020 Nobile di Montepulciano opens with a classic blend of dusty black cherries, cedar shavings, worn leather and sour citrus hints. This is soft textured yet cool-toned in feel, with zesty red fruits and cedary spice guided by vibrant acidity. It tapers off long and lightly structured, leaving a bitter tinge to linger as violet inner florals fade.

From the Sangiovese prugnolo Gentile vineyards, one bottle per plant, it ferments in wood and ages in large and small oak barrels for 18 months to then refine at least 6 months in the bottle.

Varietal: Sangiovese

In its native Italy, Sangiovese is the most widely planted red grape varietal, and has been for several centuries now. It has since spread to several other countries around the world, but will probably always been most readily associated with the rolling hillscapes of Tuscany. It isn't difficult to understand why it is so revered; alone, in single variety bottles, young Sangiovese is lively, full of fresh summer fruits flavors and beautifully drinkable in its lightness. When aged, it has the special ability to soak up the oak and vanilla or chestnut flavors from the barrel, and delights wine drinkers with its complexity and many layers of character. However, the grape does occasionally cause some difficulty for wine makers, as it is one which holds a high acidity, whilst being light on tannins and body. As such, wine makers have experimented greatly with the Sangiovese grapes, from harvesting very low yields to blending it and aging it in different ways in order to make the most of its unique properties. The results are rarely short of spectacular, and Sangiovese is widely recognized as a grape varietal to look out for if you are searching for quality.

Tuscany has been producing fine wines for almost three thousand years, and as such is widely recognized as being one of the key Old World wine regions which have shaped the way we understand and enjoy quality wines throughout history. Interestingly, the region is typified by a unique soil type which is not particularly good for growing grapevines, but in Tuscany, the emphasis has always been on quality over quantity, and low yields with high levels of flavor and intensity are preferred, and have become a feature of the region's wine industry. The main grape varietals grown in Tuscany are Sangiovese for the distinctive, flavorful and complex red wines, and Vernaccia for the exquisite dry white wines, although the last couple of decades have seen more varietals grown and an increasing trend towards 'Bordeaux style' wines.

Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
