92-94 The 2015 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges contains 30% whole bunch fruit this year. It has a refined and very composed bouquet, detailed with scents of blackberry, raspberry preserve, touches of undergrowth and pressed rose petals. I appreciate the manner in which this gently unfurls with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy texture, very well-judged acidity, a little "distant" at first but it gradually opens up in your presence, offering fine structure and spice-tinged raspberry and cranberry notes towards the finish. This is a complex and intellectual offering from one of the appellation's greatest vineyards. ... More details

Bright, dark red. Captivating scents of raspberry, blackberry, dried flowers, violet and musky stone. Fat, plush and sweet but laid-back, conveying terrific saline depth and harmonious framing acidity to its dark berry and licorice flavors. Not nearly as open in the mouth as it is on the nose; in fact, this is a baby today. Finishes with serious, broad, fine-grained tannins and lovely lift for the vintage.

This is at once notably ripe but attractively fresh with its combination of densely fruited red currant, raspberry and warm earth aromas. The rich, muscular and highly vibrant middle weight plus flavors exude a subtle minerality while delivering superb depth and persistence on the sappy, firm and ever-so-mildly austere finale. Interestingly given the style of the vintage this isn't quite a big and robust as it usually is which should permit it to be approachable after only 6 to 8 years yet it has the stuffing to effortlessly develop over 15 to 18.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Region: Burgundy

In the beautiful French wine region of Burgundy, there is archaeological evidence to suggest that there has been viticultural activity going on for at least two thousand years. To add to this, there are early written records praising the exceptional wines produced in this region dating back to the 6th century, making Burgundy one of the oldest established and still operational wine regions in the world. The region is most commonly associated with fine red wines, with Pinot Noir being the primary grape varietal grown on its rolling hillsides and gently sloping valleys. However, Chardonnay grapes are also produced in abundance for the production of their fine white wines, with both varietals benefiting greatly from the region's warm, hot summers and the superb soils which make up the terroir.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
