The top-shelf Cantina Tramin 2017 Alto Adige Chardonnay Riserva Troy is a sultry and sophisticated white that offers elegance and power in equal measure. From a warm vintage and a cooler high-altitude climate, the wine finds good balance with lots of vibrant fruit flavors of quince, nectarine and cantaloupe. There are some delicate oak-driven aromas of spice and toasted almond that add an extra level of dimension to the palate and overall texture. Troy would make a good pairing partner to baked sole in herb butter. About 4,300 bottles were released.

Rated 92 by Wine Spectator
This chardonnay has already reached its best drinking age, with a very ripe apple and vanilla nose, then a really silky palate that has very good depth. With a little more elegance at the finish, it would have rated even higher. Drink or hold.
Winery
Intense golden yellow. Delicate floral and citrusy nuances, tropical fruit, chamomile and peppermint with a fine touch of roasted almonds and hazelnuts. Very elegantly Troy shows off his Alpine character: ripe exotic notes of mango, banana and Galia melon are tinged with subtle tones of hazelnuts against a backdrop of incredible freshness and salty minerality. The finish is long and juicy with a lively mineral backbone.

Varietal: Chardonnay

There are few white wine grape varietals as famous or widely appreciated as the Chardonnay, and with good reason. This highly flexible and adaptable grape quickly became a favorite of wineries due to its fairly neutral character. This neutrality allows the wineries to really show off what they are capable of doing, by allowing features of their terroir or aging process to come forward in the bottle. As well as this, most high quality wineries which produce Chardonnay wines take great efforts to induce what is known as malolactic fermentation, which is the conversion of tart malic acids in the grapes to creamy, buttery lactic acids associated with fine Chardonnay. Whilst the popularity of Chardonnay wines has fluctuated quite a considerable amount over the past few decades, it seems the grape varietal allows enough experimentation and versatility for it always to make a successful comeback.

Region: Trentino/Alto Adige

The northernmost Italian wine region of Trentino-Alto Adige has been producing unique and characterful wines for centuries, and is today widely considered to be the home of Italy's finest white wines, and several outstanding red wines, too. The region itself is quite unlike any other in Italy, as a large Germanic population and the proximity to other European countries has led to a range of interesting influences on the viticulture of Trentino-Alto Adige. The result is a range of wines made with native and imported grape varietals which are packed full of beautiful alpine flavors, and white wines which have all the crispness and dryness of the finest German wines. Trentino-Alto Adige is a region where traditional practices reign supreme, and it is heartening to see that most of the region's output still comes from relatively small, independent family run wineries, dedicated to the quality and uniqueness of their produce.

Country: Italy

It isn't difficult to understand why Italy is famed not just for the quality of its wines, but also for the vast variety and range of characteristics found in the wines there. The terrain of the country varies wildly, from the lush rolling green hills and valley of Tuscany, to the sun drenched rocky coasts of Sicily, the mountainous and alpine regions of the north, and the marshy lowlands of the east. Italy really does have a little bit of everything. Combine this huge range of landscapes with an almost perfect climate for grape cultivation, and you have a country seemingly designed for viticultural excellence. The results speak for themselves, and it is clear to see that wine has become an inseparable part of Italian culture as a result of its abundance and brilliance. Each village, city and region has a local wine perfectly matched with the cuisine of the area, and not an evening passes without the vast majority of Italian families raising a glass of locally sourced wine with pride and pleasure.
