Made with Syrah that stays on the skins (with some whole clusters) for six months in amphorae, the 2020 Keir Rosso is a wine that requires considerable manual labor, Tua Rita proprietor Stefano Frascolla tells me. They work with five amphorae (called "orcio" in Tuscany). This is a wine of enormous character and depth. The winey founder, the late Virgilio Bisti (Stefano's father-in-law), always believed in Syrah and paid special attention to this varietal. His instincts proved spot-on, as Syrah from his property in Suvereto shows outstanding results. There is so much varietal character here with dark fruit, earth and crushed peppercorn. The results are bright, fresh and full of character. This bottle hits it out of the ballpark. ... More details

Chocolate-covered blueberries, coffee grinds and black pepper on the nose are echoed on the palate that offers more of the metallic tang of fresh pepper and top soil, but also the lushness of berries in chocolate, couched in gleaming, polished tannins.

Lots of syrah meaty character here, together with fresh and dried flowers. Really perfumed. Medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, long finish. This is the really deal. Six months on the skin. Amphora. Drink or hold.

Marked by blackberry, black olive, bacon and black pepper aromas and flavors, this red delivers fine varietal character. Supple and harmonious, despite the firm structure, ending with a complex cascade of fruit, spice and mineral notes. Best from 2025 through 2040. 208 cases made, 50 cases imported.
Winery
This elegant wine, Keir, can express a clear contrast between finesse and fullness. It has been vinified in amphora, an ancient process that brings out the characteristics of this varietal. It is fulled manually in open pots and the skins undergo a long maceration. This method, which for us is unconventional, gives our Syrah an original expression.

Varietal: Syrah

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines. It is also regularly used as a blending grape, where it is prized for its ability to add a bold and strong, spicy punch to mellow, blended wines.

Region: Tuscany

The beautiful region of Tuscany has been associated with wine production for almost three thousand years, and as such is one of the oldest and most highly respected wine producing regions in the world. The hot, sunny climate supports quite a wide range of grapes, but the grape varietals most widely grown across this large region are Sangiovese and Vernaccia, both of which are used in the production of Tuscany's most distinctive red and white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon and other imported grape varietals have also flourished there for over two hundred years, but it wasn't until the 1970's and the rise of the 'Super Tuscans' that they were widely used, when the fine wineries of the region began experimenting with Bordeaux style red wines to great effect.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
