The 2021 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is a soft, easygoing wine. There's lovely upfront richness in the S&B, but less in the way of persistence or complexity. Sweet floral, marzipan and tangerine oil notes add depth, but the mid-palate and finish feel somewhat hollow. The 2021 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is a soft, easygoing wine. There's lovely upfront richness in the S&B, but less in the way of persistence or complexity. Winery
From wild old vines planted in 1971 on their own roots, this wine is always the most mineral and sea driven in the range. This is the result of the vines standing atop the most uniformly light and rocky soils. The old chardonnay vines are planted on a gently north leaning knoll and in close proximity to the Pacific. The combination of old vines, cool ocean air, fog, and marine soil create a wine of complexity unrivaled in the Santa Rita Hills. The 2021 is no different, and with notes of lemon custard, briny oyster shell and chalk, all reflective of the sites marine influences. Having more structure and texture than previous years, this is one of the most complete bottlings yet.

Varietal: Chardonnay

For most people, the Chardonnay grape varietal is one of the quintessential white wine grapes. It isn't difficult to understand why; Chardonnay may well have started off in regions of France (where it is still used widely today in both single variety white wines as well as sparkling Champagne wines) but it is now grown in every wine producing country in the world. Indeed, it was the New World that took Chardonnay to some exciting new extremes – this relatively neutral grape has the fantastic ability to carry much of its terroir in the bottle, resulting in a fascinating range of flavors and styles. Furthermore, Chardonnay is one of the few white wine grapes which is well suited to aging, as can be seen in some of the excellent produce consistently coming out of Burgundy, and elsewhere in the world. With everything from buttery, creamy characteristics to vibrant tropical fruit notes, Chardonnay will never cease to surprise and impress.

Santa Barbara benefits from the same west coast sunshine the rest of the state does, and has a fine set of soils which help give the wines some of their distinctive flavours. The majority of Santa Barbara wines are red, with Cabernet Sauvignon being an important grape varietal for the dozens of wineries which call the county their home. However, white wine production is very much on the increase in Santa Barbara, as wine-makers discover how good the blend of sunshine and Pacific wind can be for many classic French white wine grape varietals.
