The 2021 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese offers an intense, almost raisiny but also fresh and flinty bouquet with concentrated and candied fruit aromas. Very ripe yellow peach, mango and mandarin orange aromas with notes of floral honey and fresh basil. Ripe, substantial and well-structured, the fresh acidity give this precise contours. Seriously creamy on the mid-palate, but the finish is super clean. Made for the long-term. Drink or hold.

Intense acidity matches the even more intense flavors of baked pineapple, mango and lemon pith in this blockbuster off-dry white. Minerality fights itself through and emerges on the finish, leaving a long wet stone note. It is hard to put down now, but those who cellar it, will be rewarded. Best after 2026.

Honeyed, supple and rich, with white tea and white chocolate notes layered over apple and ripe pear. Features a snappy, fresh fruit profile, which brings good energy to carry the off-dry profile. Offers green herbs and almond skin bitterness that drive impressive energy and length. Drink now through 2040. 650 cases made, 65 cases imported

Varietal: Riesling

Riesling grapes are very rarely blended with others in the development of wines, and for good reason. These pale grapes which originated in the cool Rhine Valley of Germany are notable for their 'transparency' of flavor, which allows the characteristics of their terroir to shine through in wonderful ways. The result of this is a wine which carries a wide range of interesting flavors quite unlike those found in other white wines, finished off with the distinctively floral perfume Riesling supplies so well. Many wineries in Germany and elsewhere tend to harvest their Riesling grapes very late – often as late as January – in order to make the most of their natural sweetness. Other methods, such as encouraging the noble rot fungus, help the Riesling grape varietal present some truly unique and exciting flavors in the glass, and the variety of wines this varietal can produce mean it is one of the finest and most interesting available anywhere.

Region: Rheingau / Rheinhessen

The beautiful German wine region of Rheingau is home to many of the country's most famous and highly respected white wines, with many of the Riesling wines to come out of this mountainous area being widely considered to be amongst the finest on earth. The reason for this is due to the fact that when processed carefully and correctly, the Riesling grape is capable of expressing much of the terroir it is grown on, and there are few better terroirs in the world for this grape varietal than those found in Rheingau. With mineral rich soils, crisp, clear mountain water and cool, gentle climatic conditions, the grapes here grow and ripen slowly, producing fruit of exceptional quality and wines of real character and distinction. Today, the region of Rheingau is also growing Pinot Noir grapes, and experimenting with several other varietals in an attempt to widen its international appeal as a region.

Country: Germany

As in many Old World countries, the rise of viticulture in Germany came about as a result of the Roman Empire, who saw the potential for vine cultivation in the vast flatlands around the base of the Rhine valley. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Germany's wine production levels were enormous, with much of the south of the country being used more or less exclusively for growing grapes. Over time, this diminished to make way for expanding cities and other types of industries, but Southern Germany remains very much an important wine region within Europe, with many beautifully balanced and flavorful German wines being prized by locals and international wine lovers alike. The hills around Baden-Baden and Mannheim are especially noteworthy, as these produce the high end of the characteristic semi-sweet white wines which couple so perfectly with German cheeses and pickled vegetables. However, all of Germany's wine producing regions have something special and unique to offer, and are a joy to explore and experience.
