The 2019 Cabernet Franc Caya is a blend from five different vineyards. It also has about 17% Merlot from 1990 vines, all aged for about 20 months in 27% new French barriques (the rest of varying ages). It comes in at 13.6% alcohol. This is a beauty this year, but there are some questions. Let's hope it develops well to justify my enthusiasm and merit an uptick in score. In the meanwhile, it is approachable today and very sexy for a Cab Franc. It seems relatively full-bodied this year, coating the palate and showing subtle grip on the finish. There are two quibbles. First, at the moment, this is too tinged with new wood, the key drawback. Even now, though, you can taste some classic Cab Franc underneath. If it can pull the wood in better and develop a bit in the cellar, it will be a bigger winner. That might only require a year or two. Today, it will produce some oohs and aahs anyway, as it seems very ready to drink. Second, a bigger concern, might be its softness. I'm less than certain it has the backbone to hold gracefully for an extended time. In theory, holding this should solve the wood problem and then it should develop from there, but it has to prove it can hold and develop well. No matter what, this is going to be a crowd-pleaser, but it might also be something more. There were 1,283 cases produced. ... More details

Varietal: Cabernet Franc

Today, Cabernet Franc is one of the most widely planted grape varietals in the world, and thrives well in temperate climates and valley regions in many Old and New World countries. Its importance in wine history cannot be overstated – as one of the key ingredients for the magnificent Bordeaux and Bordeaux-style wines, it has helped shape the world of quality wines and raise the bar for vintners across the globe. The Cabernet Franc varietal lends its wonderful array of unusual, spicy and fruity aromas to blended wines, and yet can also carry itself very well in single variety bottles too. The bright red color of the fermented Cabernet Franc juices make this an elegant varietal, packed full of delightfully intense, rich flavors of currants, and perfumes of violets and tobacco.

Region: New York

For over four hundred years, New York state has been consistently producing many of the United States finest wines, making the most of the oceanic climate and cool winds which blow over the many vineyards which surround the city. Indeed, certain wineries within the state boast an impressive heritage, with more than one dating back to the 18th century. The state itself has four key wine regions - Lake Erie AVA, Finger Lakes AVA, Hudson River and Long Island, and also features hundreds of smallholdings producing wines of a unique character made using more traditional methods. A wide variety of fine grape varietals are grown across the state, from esteemed old world grapes such as Riesling and Pinot Noir, to an expansive array of New World hybrid grapes which make the wines of this region so unique.

Country: United States

The first European settlers to consider growing grapevines in the United States must have been delighted when they discovered the now famous wine regions within California, Oregon and elsewhere. Not even in the Old World are there such fertile valleys, made ideal for vine cultivation by the blazing sunshine, long, hot summers and oceanic breezes. As such, it comes as little surprise that today more than eighty-nine percent of United States wines are grown in the valleys and on the mountainsides of California, where arguably some of the finest produce in the world is found. However, American wine does not begin and end with California, and due to the vast size of the country and the incredible range of terrains and climates found within the United States, there is probably no other country on earth which produces such a massive diversity of wines. From ice wines in the northern states, to sparkling wines, aromatized wines, fortified wines, reds, whites, rosés and more, the United States has endless surprises in store for lovers of New World wines.
