Rated 92 - The 2017 Ceretto Barolo has gentle, ripe cherry, cream and fine oak spice notes. The nose is attractive but a little subdued rather than being clearly delineated. On the palate it has a beautiful, super-silky texture with very fine integrated tannins. In fact, this seems like a Ceretto signature - beautifully managed, refined and fine-textured tannins. It melts in the mouth then disappears. It lacks a little concentration in the middle yet is very charming with a lovely, elegant style. Wait maybe one year to drink but it can last for up to 20. - The Wine Independent

The 2017 Barolo is a nervy, taut wine. Crushed flowers, dried cherry, mint and spice develop first, followed by darker more balsamic-inflected shades of fruit that open with a bit of coaxing. I would give the 2017 at least a year or two in bottle, as it is not especially forthcoming today. In 2017 Ceretto did not bottle their flagship Barolo Bricco Rocche. All of the best fruit from that site was used for the straight Barolo.

A supple, elegant red, whose cherry, earth, eucalyptus and underbrush flavors are supported by a firm structure. A light astringency graces the finish. Best from 2024 through 2040. 700 cases imported.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.

For hundreds of years, the beautiful alpine region of Piedmont in north-west Italy has been producing excellent quality red wines, and some of the most characterful sparkling white wines to have ever come out of the Old World. The region is dominated by the mighty Alps which form the border between Italy, France and Switzerland, and the Moscato grapes that are grown in the foothills of this mountain range carry much of the Alps' flavors in their fruit, and are fed by crystal clear mountain waters. However, it is the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which are the real stars of this region, and the highly respected wineries which cover much of Piedmont have generations of experience when it comes to processing and aging these grape varietals to produce the superb wines which come out of appellations such as Barolo and Barberesco.

Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
