The 2017 Hermitage Ligne de Crete Les Grandes Vignes is a forceful, muscular brute. Blueberries and blackberries dominate the nose, allowing just hints of the wine's stony underpinning and oak aging to seep through. Full-bodied and monochromatic, it demands a good 4-5 years in the cellar. In any event, readers will want to put it away to allow some of the copious tannins to resolve. The long, complex finish of mocha, olives and roasted meat suggests good things lie ahead for the patient. ... More details

Darker and weightier than the 2015 and 2016, a touch of tar and liquorice to the dark plum and blackberry followed by violets and blackcurrant which come with air. Fuller in body than the previous two vintages, but still gentle for a Hermitage; fruity and long with a gently resinous finish. The alcohol feels a little more raised than the 2015 and 2016, but it's not unbalanced. A structured example of this cuvée, but still very approachable and elegant.

Layers of scorched earth, graphite, clove and peppercorn perfume this robust, almost meaty, Syrah sourced from a sunny amphitheater at the top of the Hermitage slope. Tasted at the end of 2021, the rich wine is packed with flavors of roasted plum and black-cherry compote, but dimensions of flora and earth are still yet to awaken. Cellar till 2023 at least. The wine should improve through 2050 and hold further. (Cellar Selection)

The 2017 Hermitage Les Grandes Vignes is slightly more sunny and exuberant, yet it still has the more reserved, mineral-laced style of all these wines, which I'm sure is the hallmark of this higher elevation, granite terroir. Blackberries, currants, scorched earth, peppered meat, and spice all emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a balanced, layered mouthfeel and a beautiful finish. This classic Hermitage is going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and have 20-25 years of overall longevity.

Varietal: Syrah

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines. It is also regularly used as a blending grape, where it is prized for its ability to add a bold and strong, spicy punch to mellow, blended wines.

Region: Rhone Valley

In southern France, one of the primary wine regions responsible for the production of a fine and varied range of wines is the Rhone Valley. Split into two large sub-regions, this expansive valley benefits from micro-climates which allow the wineries to grow a vast array of fine grape varietals. The northern region is the more limited one in regards to the amount of varietals grown, focusing predominantly on raising excellent quality Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier vines for their distinctive and elegant range of wines. The southern region, on the other hand, has a beautifully Mediterranean climate, and is home to dozens of grape varietals which are used to produce white, red and rosé wines, alongside some of the most famous and widely loved blended wines in the world.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
