Les Grandes Ruchottes sits close to Les Caillerets on the slope above Chassagne-Montrachet, but produces very different styles of wine from its redder, deeper soils. This is richer and more textured than its neighbour in 2018, with greater weight and concentration, deftly integrated 20% new wood, hints of cream and butter and pithy underlying acidity. ... The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes Ruchottes is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, white flowers, fresh bread, Meyer lemon and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping, it's satiny attack segues into an open and charming mid-palate. Lively and precise, this will show well with just a few years in bottle and offer a broad drinking window thereafter.

Like the Champ Gains this too is overtly floral in character with pretty and airy aromas of spice and citrus-suffused white orchard fruit. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the lightly stony and chalky-textured flavors that terminate in a linear, saline and chiseled finish. This lovely effort is like rolling small stones around in the mouth and a wine that should age gracefully over the mid-term.

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Grandes Ruchottes 1er Cru had a heavy reduction at first, although it seemed easy to shift. Underneath lies plenty of citrus fruit, orange pith, beeswax and lanolin aromas all defined and focused. The palate is well-defined with a fine bead of acidity, quite spicy and tensile. Modest in length with a persistent yet bitter finish. Fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

green grapes

Varietal: Chardonnay

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one which has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is the Chardonnay. This green skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape, and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

Region: Burgundy

There are few more famous wine regions in the world than Burgundy, and this special area has given much to raise the profile of fine French wines around the world. Although most commonly associated with excellent quality red wines made with the Pinot Noir varietal, this region is home to several red and white varietals and produces and impressive range of wines, from still to sparkling, dry to sweet, full bodied and aged, and from to light and drinkable. The region of Burgundy has been producing excellent wines for centuries, with much evidence to suggest that the ancient Gauls were the first to cultivate the native vines which flourish here in the warm summers, and on the excellent soil fed by local rivers. This type of heritage has led to a wine industry highly unique, deeply traditional, and with an exquisite reputation to uphold.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.

Appellation: Cote De Beaune

Anyone who knows anything about fine white wines, and especially fine Chardonnay wines, will surely tell you that there is nowhere on earth quite as impressive as Cote De Beaune when it comes to this particular grape varietal. This beautiful part of the Cote d'Or has been producing many of the world's finest Chardonnay wines for centuries, and their blend of traditional and modern techniques mean that their reputation has been upheld and maintained in the twenty-first century. However, it isn't all about white wine in Cote De Beaune, as the area also produces vast amounts of characterful and interesting red wines, predominantly made from the Pinot Noir grape. Cote De Beaune Pinot Noir tends to be lighter and fruitier than others, and absolutely delicious.
