The 2020 Chardonnay has a nicely detailed bouquet, not complex yet taut and focused, offering orchard fruit and touches of dewy meadow. The harmonious palate is well balanced with hints of strawberry intertwined with citrus fruit and a faint dab of blood orange. There’s lovely depth here, and a precise, persistent finish. This comes strongly recommended. Just superb. ... More details

Ripe, juicy and fresh, the 2020 Chardonnay reveals picturesque and healthy fruit aromas of Bosc pear, sweet Meyer lemon and pan sautéed yellow apples with notions of citrus blossom and lemon pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is focused, precise and balanced with notions of graham cracker, yellow peach and cardamom madeleines. Juicy acidity elevates the mouthfeel before concluding with a food-friendly and delightfully lingering finish. Bravo, it is yet another excellent bottling that was commanded by the Mullineux team for their staff empowerment project. Add this bottle to your shopping list.

The wine has a light pale straw colour and exudes white Phylica (fynbos) blossom and melba toast on the nose. It awakens the palate with a superb whetstone minerality, thanks to its racy acidity and enticing flavours of fresh Granny Smith apple and candied lemon rind. This rich wine displays complexity and finesse with a broad brioche-like mid-palate and prickly limestone drives the focused and lingering finish. Best served at 10 to 12 ?C.

Varietal: Chardonnay

For most people, the Chardonnay grape varietal is one of the quintessential white wine grapes. It isn't difficult to understand why; Chardonnay may well have started off in regions of France (where it is still used widely today in both single variety white wines as well as sparkling Champagne wines) but it is now grown in every wine producing country in the world. Indeed, it was the New World that took Chardonnay to some exciting new extremes – this relatively neutral grape has the fantastic ability to carry much of its terroir in the bottle, resulting in a fascinating range of flavors and styles. Furthermore, Chardonnay is one of the few white wine grapes which is well suited to aging, as can be seen in some of the excellent produce consistently coming out of Burgundy, and elsewhere in the world. With everything from buttery, creamy characteristics to vibrant tropical fruit notes, Chardonnay will never cease to surprise and impress.

Region: Coastal Region

The coastal region of South Africa is a wonderful place for viticulture. With gorgeously long, hot summer days, tempered by brisk oceanic winds, the grapevines can grow healthily, the fruit can ripen fully, and beautiful wines of great character and flavor can be made. For several hundred years now, the coastal region of South Africa has proven itself to be a highly important wine region, capable of supporting many grape varietals, suitable for still, fortified and sparkling wines. Today, the most popular grapes by far are Chenin Blanc, which produces the most recognizable wines of South Africa. However, also popular are many of the Bordeaux varieties of red and white grape, along with relative newcomers, such as Pinotage, which grow exceptionally well in the coastal terroir.

Country: South Africa

With its hot, long summers and oceanic winds from both the west and the east, South Africa is something of a haven for a wide range of imported grape varietals. Since the mid-18th century, the country has been associated with some very fine wines made using complex and careful blending techniques, with one of the most famous and widely loved early examples being constructed from Pontac, Muscadel and Chenin Blanc varietals. Since those colonial days, the regions around Cape Town have proven again and again to be fantastic areas for producing interesting and delicious wines, with many of the best examples of Champagne style sparkling wines originating from these fertile lands. From the scorchingly hot regions of Orange Rivers, to the far cooler and temperate appellations in Walker Bay, South Africa has developed a booming wine industry responsible for many of the finest New World wines available anywhere across the globe.
