Blackberry, dried strawberry and spice. Some flint and asphalt and even graphite. Full-bodied and layered with dark fruit and a fine and firm tannin structure that goes very long. Sustainable. Best after 2024.

Coming from deeper basalt soils, brilliant aromas emerge from the 2019 Pinot Noir Reserve, which offers up notes of red cherry liqueur, crushed roses, and well-balanced oak spices. Medium to full-bodied, it captures wonderful freshness, with ripe tannins, a focused, more linear mouthfeel, and a spicy, fresh finish. It’s a touch more austere compared to the other Pinots from Ponzi, but I enjoy its more angular feel already. It’s an age-worthy wine that needs time to open up over the coming 10 years.

A stunning combination of brisk acidity, silky tannins and voluminous fruit begins with aromas of blackberry jam, coriander, cedar and a trace of vanilla. Black cherries and dark plum fruit flavors form a ball around a core of orange pekoe tea and milk chocolate. A full, rich mouthfeel only heightens the wine's sense of delightful decadence. (Editors’ Choice)

Blueberry compote, spiced plum and chocolate aromas laced with savory notes of rosemary, sage, tobacco and shitake. The broad palate gives black licorice, toasted coconut, amereno cherries and ancho chile surrounding a firm backbone of tarry, dusty tannins. The finish is long and reminiscent of dark chocolate.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir grapes have been cultivated in and around the Burgundy region of France for centuries, where they have long been favored by vintners for their wide range of flavors, their thin skins and for producing wines which have light, smooth tannins, and a beautiful garnet red color Whilst they remain one of the flagship varietals of this special region, their wide popularity and recent status as a fashionable 'romantic' varietal has led to them being planted in almost every wine producing country in the world. However, the Pinot Noir demands a huge amount of care and attention from the wineries that wish to grow it, as this varietal is particularly susceptible to various forms of mildew and rot. Despite this, the grape is otherwise a favorite with wineries for the fact that it requires little extra effort once it begins fermentation. Pinot Noir is also widely known for producing some of the world's most famous sparkling wines, being one of two key grapes for the production of Champagne, and several other sparkling varieties.

Region: Oregon

The Oregon wine industry is continuing to go from strength to strength, with many of their Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir wines winning important international awards in recent years. Oregon has also become renowned as an important region for the production of organic and biodynamic wines, demonstrating the fact that the wineries which are dotted across the diverse regions of the state are keen to experiment with their methods and techniques. A wide range of grape varietals flourish in Oregon, including an impressive array of Old World classic grapes alongside American hybrid varietals. This, coupled with the cooler climate and the mix of traditional and excitingly modern wine production methods makes Oregon a fascinating region for wine lovers, particularly those looking for something unique and utterly delicious.

Country: United States

Whilst there are several strains of native grape varietals in the United States, it was the introduction of the European species which prompted the country to begin producing wines on a large scale. Over the past few centuries, experimentation and cross-breeding has produced great successes in regards to the quality and suitability of the fruit grown in states such as California, Oregon, Washington and New York, and the past few decades have seen New World wines from the United States reach much higher standards. Arguably the finest United States wines have always come out of California, where the climate and terrroir is most suitable for fine wine production. The masterful blending of classic grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, amongst others including Syrah and Chardonnay, have had world beating results in recent years, prompting many to suggest that there has never been a better time for buying and drinking United States wines.

Appellation: Willamette Valley

When it comes to high quality United States wine regions, the state of Oregon certainly has its fair share. One of the key wine producing regions of Oregon is Willamette Valley, a beautiful region specializing in the production of carefully constructed and extremely flavorful Pinot Noir wines, which have gained popularity around the world as a result of their deliciously fruity nature and excellent range of characteristics. However, Willamette Valley's wine industry doesn't begin and end with this grape varietal, as wineries within the region are renowned for their love of innovation and experimentation, and are consistently experimenting with a range of fine grapes. As such, a wide array of wines come out of Willamette Valley each year, to an increasingly impressed international wine community.
