2017 was a warm and dry vintage, and the 2017 Espectacle del Montsant is a ripe and heady Garnacha at 15.5% alcohol from the spectacular vineyard in the village of La Figuera at 600 meters in altitude. The grapes are kept in cool storage for 24 hours before being sorted and destemmed to be fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured in a 4,000-liter French oak vat for some 15 months. This is ripe and heady à la Châteauneuf, spirity, open and aromatic, with notes of soy sauce and decayed violets, a little decadent. Despite having less alcohol than the 2018, the aromatic and gustative profile is different, and the balance is at a different point. It has a richness on the palate that I like very much, with deep flavors and a long, Mediterranean finish full of aromatic herbs. 5,000 bottles produced. ... More details

Varietal: Grenache

For many centuries now, vintners in the dry and arid regions of Europe have been growing the purple skinned fruits of the Grenache vines for use in a wide range of different wines. Their influence and popularity led to them being planted all over the New World in any region with the correct climatic conditions for them to thrive in, away from the damp or wet weather which causes this particular varietal to very easily rot. Grenache grapes are prized by many as a result of their spicy berry flavors, and the fact that they have a relatively high alcohol content in the bottle. This has led to them being often used as a blending grape, although single variety bottles are also common and make the most of their light body and interesting, rich flavors

The beautiful Spanish wine region of Catalunya has a history of viticulture which stretches back for over a thousand years, and has been influenced by a wide range of people who moved through the region, and brought their wine making skills and expertise with them. The region itself is a sizeable one, covering an area of sixty thousand hectares, and within this space there resides over two hundred individual wineries, ranging from small, independent and traditional ones to the larger, mass production bodegas known around the world. The terroir of Catalunya is varied, and ranges from being dry and arid, to more lush and green in the wetter parts of the region which are closer to the coast.
