Stylish up front, with pepper, violet and tobacco notes leading off, followed by a core of gently mulled cherry and blackberry fruit flavors. A late echo of bay leaf gives this a pleasantly rustic tilt at the end. Shows good range and character. Drink now through 2026. 50 cases imported.

Super fresh, purple and blue fruit here with attractive, spicy complexity; herbs and pepper abound. The palate has a deeply structured array of ripe-berry, meaty and cedary flavors and delivers a long, flinty finish. Drink or hold.

90-92 The promising 2017 Crozes Hermitage les Meysonniers delivers a pannier of plush, juicy blueberries, balanced by just enough soft tannins to keep it savory and focused. Full-bodied and rounded in the mouth, it finishes silky and long. This looks to be a beauty to drink over the next 6-7 years.

A firm granite undertone and hints of smoke and incense lend gravitas to juicy, thirst-quenching black cherry and blackberry flavors in this elegant Syrah sourced from biodynmically farmed vines. Fine, supple tannins make it welcoming in its youth, but it should drink well through 2025.

Deeply coloured. Pronounced vanilla and dark chocolate on the nose, almost malty, with a touch of prune. Full bodied, with ample mouth-coating fine tannins, slightly furry in texture. This vintage borders on over-extraction but manages to retain a sense of freshness, with just enough lightness of touch to give it drinkability. Made from over 60-year-old Syrah vines planted on a southwest-facing granite slope on the border of Hermitage, lieu-dit Varogne. Completely destemmed, then fermented in concrete then matured for 18 months, 70% in tank, 30% in demi-muid, of which 20% is new oak.

Varietal: Syrah

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines. It is also regularly used as a blending grape, where it is prized for its ability to add a bold and strong, spicy punch to mellow, blended wines.

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosé wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
