Disgorged in June 2019, the latest release of Geoffroy’s perennial superb NV Brut Premier Cru Rose de Saignee is derived entirely, like its predecessor, from the 2014 vintage. On the nose, this release is similar to the 2018 disgorgment, but it’s even more aromatically complex, with aromas of warm bread, linden and honeycomb complementing the signature scents of red berries, orange rind and spices. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and incisive, with ripe but racy acids, a concentrated core of fruit and a precise, elegantly chalky finish; indeed, this is a bit more controlled and less boisterous than last year’s edition. While the difference isn’t quite enough to merit an extra point, I do prefer this new release, and it comes warmly recommended. ... More details

The NV Brut Rose de Saignee 1er Cru is quite a bit brighter than the Blanc de Rose. Red berry, cranberry and sweet floral notes all give the wine energy, lift and tension. Even so, there is quite a bit of depth to balance things out. The contrast between tension and textural richness add up to a compelling Champagne. I loved it. This release is all 2013. Disgorged: May 2017. Dosage is 8 grams per liter.

A deeply hued rose that feels like fine raw silk on the palate, offering flavors of crushed raspberry, blood orange zest, honey and ground ginger, backed by bright, lightly juicy acidity. Chalky finish. Disgorged February 2017. Drink now through 2022. 160 cases imported.

Varietal: Champagne Blend

The careful blending of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietal grapes has long been the secret to the success of the famous sparkling wines of the Champagne region. The wines of this region have gone down in history as the finest example of France's sparkling produce, and the methods of processing the grapes in this region have been imitated in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are actually seven different grape varietals allowed to be included in a Champagne sparkling wine, although grape varietals such as Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Pinot Gris are used less and less commonly in its production. Whilst the Chardonnay varietal grapes offer their distinctive biscuit flavor and wonderful astringency, it is the Pinot Noir grapes (most commonly used for producing beautifully light red wines) which give the Champagne wines their length and backbone.

Region: Champagne

The north-easterly region of Champagne in France is amongst the most famous and well respected wine regions in the world. It's principle produce, the elegant sparkling white wines made with a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Petit Meunier grape varietals, have consistently grown in popularity for hundreds of years, and are still the sparkling wines of choice for most people across the globe. The region is quite an unusual one, in many ways. The high altitude and cool climate make it difficult for the grapes to ripen, but it is helped enormously by the mineral-rich, chalky soils which typify the region, and the heavily forested areas which help maintain moisture in the soil and an even temperature. The wineries of the region have generations of expertise, and know exactly how to make the most of their grape varietals, resulting in the distinctive and famous wines of Champagne we know and love.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
