The 2014 Semi-Dry Riesling is sourced from the winery's Seneca Lake vines (unlike the Dry Riesling). It comes in at 24 grams per liter of residual sugar and 12% alcohol (versus 12.5% for the Dry Riesling). This is concentrated and simply stuffed in the mid-palate for this price range. Lingering nicely on the finish, it is clearly off-dry, but doesn't really seem sweet. This leans more on the fruit than the intense, laser bursts of acidity common to many young Rieslings, but its acidity easily balances the sugar--so, it is clearly there. As the wine airs, warms and opens up, it shows more crispness. It's ultimately fresh and lovely, beautifully balanced and delicious. It's not the best wine, but it is the Best Buy of this group of Frank submissions. Buy this by the case. ... More details

Varietal: Riesling

Although they originated in Germany's beautiful Rhine Valley, the Riesling grape soon spread around the world, where it thrives in many countries with a colder climate which can support this pale and unique grapes. Riesling grapes are considered one of the finest varietals on earth, capable of expressing fascinating features of the soil type they are grown on, resulting in some highly interesting wines with plenty to offer those who are looking for something different. Riesling grapes are also noted for their aromas, which tend to be highly perfumed, floral and often with smoky notes accentuating their unusual flavor Because this was always the predominant grape grown in Germany and other such countries, Riesling wineries have always been keen to experiment with its range. This has resulted in dry white wines, sparkling wines, semi sweet wines and several others, but the finest examples are usually considered to be the Riesling dessert wines. These are occasionally made with unusual processes, including the 'eiswine' method, in which the grapes are allowed to freeze in the early frosts, or by allowing the development of 'noble rot', which withers the grapes and results in some truly spectacular and unusual flavors.

Region: New York

New York state has a relatively long history of wine-making and vineyard cultivation, with vineyards in the region dating back to the Dutch settlements of the 17th century. As such, the region has slowly discovered the unique qualities of their terroir, and has developed a distinctive set of grape varietals which have gone on to represent the state and make their wines both unique and highly regarded. New York state has four key wine producing areas – Lake Erie AVA, Finger Lakes AVA, Hudson River and Long Island, each making the most of their relatively cool climate and characterful terroirs. The strong blend of both traditional and contemporary wine making methods found in this region has led to New York state being responsible for many of the finest and most interesting wines to come out of the United States.
