Varietal Italian White Blend

Italian white blend wines exemplify the country's rich winemaking heritage, offering a diverse range of styles and flavors. What makes these blends unique is the meticulous interplay of indigenous grape varieties, each contributing distinctive characteristics to the final composition. Grapes like Trebbiano, Garganega, Vermentino, and Malvasia often feature in these blends, creating a harmonious fusion of floral, citrus, and tropical fruit notes. The versatility of Italian white blends is underscored by their regional diversity, from the crisp and mineral-driven whites of Friuli-Venezia Giulia to the fuller-bodied expressions of Sicily. These wines frequently exhibit a balance between acidity and texture, making them suitable for various occasions and culinary pairings. Italian white blends reflect a commitment to tradition while embracing innovation, offering a delightful exploration for wine enthusiasts. Whether enjoyed as a refreshing aperitif or paired with Mediterranean cuisine, these wines showcase Italy's vinous mosaic, inviting enthusiasts to savor the unique tapestry of flavors crafted from the country's indigenous white grape varieties.

Country Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Region Tuscany

The central Italian region of Tuscany is widely understood to be one of the world's most famous and highly regarded wine regions. The beautiful rolling hillsides and medieval towns and castles which are a key feature of the area are also home to many of Europe's finest wineries, and extremely high quality vineyards growing the distinctive Sangiovese and Vernaccia grape varietals which are the flavorful backbone of Tuscany's wonderful red and white wines. For almost three thousand years, this region has been recognized as an ideal home for wine production on a large scale, and the ancient Etruscans, Greeks and Romans all noticed that fine grape varietals flourished on the unique soils and under the hot sunshine which typifies the area. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

VM 93pts

Vinous Media

The 2023 Bianco di Ampeleia is a gorgeous, exotic wine. It emerges from a site planted with a Trebbiano, Malvasia and Ansonica field blend. Tangerine peel, mint, white pepper, peach and hazelnut are some of the notes that come through on the palate. There’s gorgeous phenolic depth because of low yields in the vineyard, caused by outbreaks of Peronospora that were key events in this challenging growing season throughout Italy. This is the first vintage done without skin contact. Exotic and beguiling.

James Suckling

Intense and perfumed white with quince and pear juice, together with floral whiffs of elderberries and lemons. Light-bodied with savory and almondy flavors and a dense, juicy and almost tannic, chewy texture. Slightly old-fashioned feel here. Drink now.

Wine Spectator

Golden and cloudy, this white evokes floral, apple skin and orange peel flavors, with a hint of apple cider vinegar. Fresh and mouthwatering, with a crisp finish. Trebbiano, Ansonica and Malvasia. Drink now. 2,150 cases made, 420 cases imported.

Winery Notes

The 1st vintage of Bianco di Ampeleia was 2016. A neighbor's vineyard had old vines of a local biotype of Trebbiano Toscano; Ampeleia used its cuttings and starting planting in 2013, between Ampeleia di Mezzo and Ampeleia di Sopra (300-600m with varied soil composition). The vineyards were planted to 90% Trebbiano, 5% Ansonaco (aka Ansonica aka Inzolia), and 5% Malvasia. In true field-blend fashion, the three varieties are interspersed through the vineyard. The grapes were co-harvested at yields of 50hl/ha in mid-September and co-fermented in concrete vats, with 7-10 days contact with the skins. It aged on its lees for 6 months in concrete.
