Riesling

Riesling grapes have been grown in and around central Europe for centuries, and over time, they became the lasting symbol of south Germany's ancient and proud wine culture. Whilst the reputation of German wines abroad has in the past been mixed, the Germans themselves take an enormous amount of pride in their wineries, and Riesling grapes have now spread around the globe, growing anywhere with the correct climate in which they can thrive. Riesling grape varietals generally require much cooler climatic conditions than many other white grapes, and they are generally considered to be a very 'terroir expressive' varietal, meaning that the features and characteristics of the terroir they are grown on comes across in the flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is this important feature which has allowed Riesling wines to be elevated into the category of 'fine' white wines, as the features of the top quality bottles are generally considered to be highly unique and offer much to interest wine enthusiasts.

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. For the past couple of centuries, the United States has set about transforming much of its suitable land into vast vineyards, capable of supporting a wide variety of world-class grape varietals which thrive on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coastlines. Of course, we immediately think of sun-drenched California in regards to American wines, with its enormous vineyards responsible for the New World's finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines, but many other states have taken to viticulture in a big way, with impressive results. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

New York state has a wine history which stretches back to the mid-17th century, when Dutch settlers first began cultivating grape vines in the Hudson Valley. Since then, the wine industry of New York has grown from strength to strength, mixing the old with the new as wineries continue to experiment with modern techniques alongside their traditional heritage. Indeed, certain wineries in New York state hold a claim to being amongst the oldest and most well established in the New World, with at least one dating back over three hundred and fifty years. New York state is responsible for a relatively small range of grape varietals, due to its cooler, damper climate, but many varietals such as Riesling and Seyval Blanc thrive in such conditions and produce wines a of singular quality.

Very hard to believe that this is an entry-level dry riesling. So joyful, succulent, and expressive, brimming with fresh tropical fruit, white flower and peach aromas. Great concentration and spot-on balance on the medium-bodied palate. Very long, complete finish with great mineral freshness. From grapes that were cold-soaked for three days, then one-third barrel-fermented and two-thirds in stainless steel. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The fruit in this wine is sourced from Kelby James Russell and Julia Hoyle’s three favourite locations in their home vineyard, Lahoma. From the sandstone site to cold soaking on skins, fermentation in neutral barriques and stainless-steel tanks, the final blend in the bottle is an expressive Dry Riesling with stunning aromatics. Rich and textural on the nose and palate with notes of grilled grapefruit, honey mangoes, and magnolia flowers. A saline minerality and lingering acidity offer structure. Winery Notes

Smokey grapefruit and orange pith aromas lead to a dry and structured midpalate that belie the richness of this wine. Blood orange and lemongrass flavors transition to a long finish of rich orchard fruit and mineral tension.
